Human Foods That Are Dangerous for Dogs and Cats

Today's Tips on Pets

Human Foods That Are Dangerous for Dogs and Cats

vetstreet.com

  • Some human foods can cause serious illness (and even death) in dogs and cats.
  • Pets should not be given human food unless recommended by your veterinarian.
  • If you suspect your pet may have eaten a dangerous food, contact your veterinarian immediately.

What Do I Need to Know About Foods that Are Dangerous for My Pet?

A number of human foods are dangerous to pets. Many of these foods may seem tasty to our pets but can prove deadly if eaten. It can be very tempting to offer pets food from the table, but pets should not be given human food unless recommended by your veterinarian.

If you suspect your pet may have eaten a dangerous food, contact your veterinarian immediately. In many cases, early recognition and treatment are critical.

Xylitol

Xylitol is an artificial sweetener found in products such as gum, candy, mints, toothpaste, and mouthwash. Xylitol is harmful to dogs because it causes a sudden release of insulin in the body that leads to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Xylitol can also cause liver damage in dogs. Within 30 minutes after eating, the dog may vomit, be lethargic (tired), and/or be uncoordinated.  However, some signs of toxicity can also be delayed for hours or even for a few days. Xylitol toxicity in dogs can be fatal if untreated. It is unknown whether xylitol is toxic to cats.

Chocolate, Coffee, and Caffeine

Chocolate contains theobromine, a chemical that is toxic to dogs in large enough quantities. Chocolate also contains caffeine, which is found in coffee, tea, and certain soft drinks. Different types of chocolate contain different amounts of theobromine and caffeine. For example, dark chocolate and baking chocolate contain more of these compounds than milk chocolate does, so a dog would need to eat more milk chocolate in order to become ill. However, even a few ounces of chocolate can be enough to cause illness in a small dog, so no amount or type of chocolate should be considered “safe” for a dog to eat. Chocolate toxicity can cause vomiting, diarrhea, rapid or irregular heart rate, restlessness, muscle tremors, and seizures. Death can occur within 24 hours of ingestion.

Grapes and Raisins

Grapes and raisins can cause acute (sudden) kidney failure in cats and dogs. It is unknown what the toxic agent is in these fruits. However, clinical signs can occur within 24 hours of eating and include vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy (tiredness). Other signs of illness relate to the eventual shutdown of kidney functioning.

Avocados

The avocado tree leaves, pits, fruit, and plant bark are likely all toxic. Clinical signs in dogs and cats include vomiting and diarrhea.

Garlic and Onions

Garlic and onions contain chemicals that damage red blood cells in cats and dogs. Affected red blood cells can rupture or lose their ability to carry oxygen effectively. Cooking these foods does not reduce their potential toxicity. Fresh, cooked, and/or powdered garlic and/or onions are commonly found in baby food, which is sometimes given to animals when they are sick, so be sure to read food labels carefully.

Macadamia Nuts

Macadamia nuts are common in candies and chocolates. The mechanism of macadamia nut toxicity is not well understood, but clinical signs in dogs include depression, weakness, vomiting, tremors, joint pain, and pale gums. Clinical signs can occur within 12 hours after eating. In some cases, signs can resolve without treatment in 24 to 48 hours, but patient monitoring is strongly recommended.

Prevention

Many cases of human food toxicity in pets are accidental. A pet may find and chew on a package of gum or candy, or steal food from a countertop or table. The best way to prevent this is to keep all food items in closed cabinets or in areas that are inaccessible to pets. This may be particularly difficult during the holiday season, when more candy, chocolate, fruit baskets, and other food items are around. During these times, increased vigilance can help prevent pets from finding and eating dangerous foods.

Unfortunately, some cases of food toxicity in pets occur when pets are given a human food that contains a dangerous component. In general, human food items should not be given to pets unless recommended by your veterinarian. Children should also be taught to never give candy, gum, or other human food items to pets.

For more information on human foods that are dangerous for pets, visit the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) Animal Poison Control Center. If you suspect that your pet has eaten a potentially hazardous item, contact your veterinarian immediately.

11 Table Manners That Still Matter

If you think people don’t care about etiquette at the table as much as they used to, think again. One soup slurp or tooth pick is all it takes to turn some people off. So to stay on your toes, here is a quick—and necessary—table manners refresher course from Louise Fox of the Etiquette Ladies, Canada’s Etiquette Experts:
  • If you are the recipient of a toast, keep your glass at arm’s length—never drink from it. Instead, simply nod your head and graciously say, “Thank you.”
  • Never take your cocktail to the dinner table.
  • Allow your food to cool on its own—never blow on anything.
  • If you wear lipstick, keep it off your plate and napkin by blotting it as soon as you apply it.
  • Your napkin is there for you to dab your mouth only. Do not use it to wipe off lipstick or (God forbid) blow your nose.
  • Keep your elbows off the table at all times.
  • Don’t put your purse, keys, sunglasses, or eyeglasses on the table.
  • Take food out of your mouth the way it went in. If a piece of steak fat went into your mouth with a fork, spit it out onto the fork.
  • Remove an olive pit with your thumb and index finger.
  • Taste everything on your plate before you add salt or pepper.
  • Leave your plate where it is when you are finished with your meal—don’t push it away from you.

9 things to know before getting a dog

Dogs and Life

www.puppypoopy.com

We have a three- year old minpin and while we hesitated having a pet dog before , we sure are very happy to own a minpin now due to the joy and enjoyment he gives us with his very dynamic but pleasant disposition!

We acquired another puppy later but this time the japanese spitz-terrier mix we subsequently brought in got too big faster than the minpin and became too aggressive not only for the minpin but also for us. So we decided to give away the jap spitz-terrier mix and are looking for another minpin which we generally found to be low maintenance pet dog!

So if you are one of those who haven't owned a dog yet and would love one to own one , the article below might help you decide whether to go on with your plan or just forego!

9 things to know before getting a dog

Have you been dreaming of getting a dog ever since you saw the reruns of the television classic Lassie as a kid? Or maybe you were fortunate enough to watch the original series. While your dog might not be able to save you week after week from a burning building, a runaway freight train, or the bottom of a well (and in the time it takes to finish a 30-minute episode, too!), owning a dog can be a wonderful experience.

Here are 9 things you should know and consider before choosing your canine friend.

1. Dogs Take Up a Lot of Time and Energy.

Yes, they are rewarding. But if you live alone and work twenty hours a day, then perhaps a dog is not the best choice for you. Hey, there are always those super-cool robot dogs!

2. Not Home a Lot? Invest in a Dog Walker.

If you are not often at home, and you really want a dog, you probably should invest in a dog walker. You’d probably be wise to choose a dog breed that isn’t especially needy, too. Check out PetMD‘s Breedopedia to select from a wide variety of breeds.

3. Dogs Need Enough Space.

Any dog you get should be suitable to not only your lifestyle, but your surroundings. If you live in a shoebox apartment, then a large dog is obviously not a good choice. You don’t want your dog to develop health issues, be bored or destroy things. Large dogs really belong in big places with lots of outdoor space.

4. Climate Matters.

Consider which breeds are suitable or your region’s climate, especially if you have a yard and want to keep it as an outside dog.

5. Puppies are Cute, But a Lot of Work.

Puppies require the most work when it comes to house training. If you: (a) don’t want your things chewed up, or (b) don’t have the time or money to train the puppy, consider adopting an already housebroken, adult dog.

6. Your Stuff Will Need Some Rearranging.

Make sure you have lots of chew toys available for your puppy and keep all expensive things (like shoes and clothes) out of its reach; the same goes for chemicals and medicines. Puppies like to investigate and try everything, so make sure there is nothing dangerous around for them to sample.

7. The Vet is Your Friend.

Get your dog vaccinated and spayed or neutered as soon as possible. Oh, and take your dog to the vet for its routine checkups. Your dog will thank you for it and live a much better (and longer) life.

8. Buy an Appropriate Leash

Get a proper leash and harness for your dog. A leash too small or too large may hurt it inadvertently during its walking routine, or, worse yet, allow it to hurt others or get loose and run away.

9. Have Fun!

Regardless of the dog breed you choose, have fun! They say there is no better friend than a dog. We have to agree.

Good Friday Musings !

Good Friday Musings !

What have Manny Pangilinan and Manny Villar in common? They both have the same first names!

And what's common between singer-songwriter Lady Gaga and writer Krip Yuson? They both write!

So what have Manny Pangilinan , Manny Villar, Lady Gaga and Krip Yuson all have in common?
Answer: They all have the letter "Y"  in their names!

Corny , right! Seriously  though all four celebrities , in whatever way , have been accused of plagiarism!

Manny Pangilinan (MVP)? Plagiarism ? Seriously now? The last person you would ever suspect of allegedly using other' s pieces of work as his own and for a commencement speech, at that, at the Ateneo! You inspire and motivate the graduates with a speech you were never inspired nor motivated to write? Now what exactly does inspiration and motivation mean?

Manny Villar , plagiarizing? Yup, another case of allegedly using some ad piece  for his own campaign ad during the last Presidential elections! You aspire for the Presidency, the highest office in the land , and you just use a presumably "copied" campaign ad? Think about having a very creative think-tank and what it can potentially bring to our country , if ...

Of late , there is even net talk which has escalated into net war about Krip Yuson allegedly passing off another sports journalist's  article as his own in a national magazine! Although he "reluctantly" swallowed his pride to admit a mistake and claims he was forgiven , there was still the fact that he "by- lined" or simply "lifted" someone else's work as his.  To think that you are a Hall of Fame writer-awardee ? What is that?

Finally , has anybody ever thought that the song " "Born this Way" by Lady Gaga was allegedly a "xeroxed" (oops! pardon the not so proper  use of the term ) version of an older song  presumably by another artist? And to think children may again  sing the song with credits to Lady Gaga?

Sorry for writing about this during the Holy Week...
Now , what do MVP , Manny Villar , Krip Yuson and Lady Gaga have in common, again?

Well , they are celebrities!

Gran Torino -The Movie

Walt Kowalski: [to Father Janovich] I think you're an overeducated 27-year-old virgin who likes to hold the hands of superstitious old ladies and promise them everlasting life.

This is a 2008 movie featuring Clint Eastwood set in the US MidWest, somewhere in a small suburb in Michigan . I have never been so touched by an Eastwood movie before but this one really strikes you to your very core ... try grabbing a DVD or catch it in HBO reruns!

As a bonus, it also gives us ideas on life in the US of refugee-immigrants from Southeast Asia particularly the Hmongs, a minority hill tribe from the Laos, Vietnamese and Chinese borders.

Embedded below is the movie's beautiful theme song of the same title...enjoy!

Is summer about to end?

Yes, it's still too hot nowadays as in the past two months or so...the big thing is, the rains have started to fall! That's good news for everybody. First , no more hot, prickly days for you and me!Less sweaty afternoons and less of that obligatory showers daily ! Second, the crops do need the rains these days and that would mean better harvests! Thirdly, lesser number of people getting sick due to the extreme heat!

Much as I love what summer can bring---beaches, outings, lazy days , more fruits like mangoes, melons and watermelons--- the rainy season is a welcome relief! The dams need water for power requirements, the canals need water for irrigation , the homes need water for drinking and cleaning . And in our country, the rains are a vital source of water! Thank you rainy season...just don't bring the floods back!

EASTER SUNDAY!

After the sufferings , redemption! Tolerance , sacrifice and understanding! Such are the lessons of Lent!

Christ died on the Cross for our salvation, why can't we even be more patient and more forgiving just for a day? Would it help if we , at least, keep our tempers and words in check for the Lenten season?

Amen...mea culpa!

The Day after the Fast!

Saturday ! Ready for loading after a meatless, including chicken, yesterday...bwaahahaha!

After last night's sweet and sour fish, more sour than sweet, and a half a cup of rice, I'm ready to load . Wait, after fasting yesterday ,I only got four pieces of my favorite pan de sal without the customary cup of coffee for breakfast?

Since nobody goes far on a breakfast of mere pan de sal ,we decided to have an early lunch :chicken inasal with a cup of rice softened by the complimentary sinigang soup finished by lots and lots of ice cold plain water.Good enough but...

Not content with my chicken inasal lunch , I was tempted to buy an egg sandwich which I've been missing for weeks in the supermarket... yup, it's been a long time since I got an egg sandwich ! For a pseudo dessert, double scoops of nice ube ice cream! Soo refreshing...yeah baby!

Dinner will be a little heavier : Sinigang na baboy and the fiesta treat arroz valenciana which I haven't tasted for months! Since New year's day , I think...looking forward to our family dinner!

Now, I am hungry and dinner is at least two hours away!!

Seinfeld

Seinfeld...the series!

Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer! Seinfeld's irreverent cast whose admitted preoccupation is, would you believe, NOTHING! They are also the first to admit that their show is a show about nothing! Yup , nothing where anything can happen...

This bunch of erratic people is fun to watch and hear...see them bungle their relationships ,get fired from their jobs, spill ketchup on their shirts , miss their planes and more...they even get sued as a group by a town where their private plane had an emergency landing for failing to prevent a holdup! They are far from dysfunctional people , however. On the contrary ,this set of longtime friends are lovable, witty and a fun to watch!

Miss their presence on the boob tube...

Observations at the Mall...a funny thing happened on the way to the RR

I posted earlier that the family had a Feast of a lunch yesterday at Greenwich and I then grabbed two wonderful books! Since we were already at the Mall then , the wife decided to buy some essential items from the supermarket and I dropped by the RR to wash my hands! On my way to the restroom (RR) , I noticed a very long queue by the ladies' door almost blocking the path heading to the men's door.

And so not wanting to be bothered , I just quickly went about my main business there in the first
place !

Now here's the more interesting part : I noticed this kinda' old lady in the long anxious line of women leading to the RR who was grumbling so loud . It wasn't really clear to me that time what exactly her beef was until I reflected (?) on it on my way out of the RR area. She in fact was saying out loud that " only one woman is able to enter for every five men coming out... " --- in the dialect! The same enlightening phrase she was repeating ever so loudly every time a man or woman comes out of the RR !

By golly ! Mama Mia... She was counting and noting each and every man and woman coming out of the RR while she was agonizing for her turn at the cubicle! How genius and so disciplined...can you beat that stunt? The not so old lady was so anxious to " let go" in what seemed like eternal waiting and simultaneously having the presence of mind to count ( loudly!) pedestrian flow from the men's or women's RR? Come on... give me a break!

Indeed she was a rarity! Have you seen anyone putting the hold but ready to let go of one's bladder in protracted anticipation while observing people traffic from the RR? And, to top it all, she still managed to grumble almost shouting in litany form. Or,to put it more dramatically, grumbling almost to a trance perhaps as a means to deal with the discomfort and control the imminent" overflow" ?

This was an extraordinary woman , indeed ! One for Ripley's or Guinness' ?

Now , my curiosity is awakened once more...shouldn't there be more cubicles for the ladies in their RRs considering that , by nature , they have more difficulty "letting it go" ?

Compared to men, women have a longer series of rituals to follow before being able to relieve themselves, don't they? Also, women have more "finishing touches " to perform after each and every "relief effort" . In this case , we can say women are more ritualistic than men... so why do they have less RR cubicles in the Malls? Can "urinals" be designed for women for a more efficient and faster "female relief" at the Mall ? Why hasn't women power stood up for this right or benefit in the same way that women fought for " right of suffrage" more than a century ago ? Perhaps GABRIELA can take the fight from here as started by the anxious female I encountered at the Mall's RR door!

Or do we have to wait for another century more to see women enjoying faster relief at the Malls?

But I'm just a kibitzer here and not everybody agrees with one!

17 Rules to Live by

17 Rules To Live By

Og Mandino

1. Count your blessings. Once you realize how valuable you are and how much you have going for you,...

the smiles will return, the sun will break out, the music will play and you will finally be able to move forward toward the life that God intended for you...with grace, strength, courage and confidence.

2. Today, and every day, deliver more than you are getting paid to do. The victory of success will be half won when you learn the secret of putting out more than is expected in all that you do. Make yourself so valuable in your work that eventually you will become indispensable. Exercise your privilege to go the extra miles, and enjoy all the rewards you receive. You deserve them!

3. Whenever you make a mistake or get knocked down by life, don't look back at it too long. Mistakes are life's way of teaching you. Your capacity for occasional blunders is inseparable from your capacity to reach your goals. No one wins them all, and your failures, when they happen, are just part of your growth. Shake off your blunders. How will you know your limits without an occasional failure? Never quit. Your turn will come.

4. Always reward your long hours of labor and toil in the very best way, surrounded by your family. Nurture their love carefully, remembering that your children need models, not critics, and your own progress will hasten when you constantly strive to present your best side to your children. And even if you have failed at all else in the eyes of the world, if you have a loving family, you are a success.

5. Build this day on a foundation of pleasant thoughts. Never fret at any imperfections that you fear may impede your progress. Remind yourself, as often as necessary, that you are a creature of God and have the power to achieve any dream by lifting up your thoughts. You can fly when you decide that you can. Never consider defeat again. Let the vision in your heart be in your life's blueprint. Smile!

6. Let your actions always speak for you, but be forever on guard against the terrible traps of false pride and conceit that can halt your progress. The next time you are tempted to boast, just place your fist in a full pail of water, and when you remove it, the hole remaining will give you a correct measure of your importance.

7. Each day is a special gift from God, and while life may not always be fair, you must never allow the pains, hurdles, and handicaps of the moment to poison your attitude and plans for yourself and your future. You can never win when you wear the ugly cloak of self-pity, and the sour sound of whining will certainly frighten away any opportunity for success. Never again. There is a better way.

8. Never again clutter your days or nights with so many menial and unimportant things that you have no time to accept a real challenge when it comes along. This applies to play as well as work. A day merely survived is no cause for celebration. You are not here to fritter away your precious hours when you have the ability to accomplish so much by making a slight change in your routine. No more busywork. No more hiding from success. Leave time, leave space, to grow. Now. Now! Not tomorrow!

9. Live this day as if it will be your last. Remember that you will only find "tomorrow" on the calendars of fools. Forget yesterday's defeats, and ignore the problems of tomorrow. This is it. Doomsday. All you have. Make it the best day of your year. The saddest words you can ever utter are, "If I had my life to live over again..." Take the baton, now. Run with it! This is your day!

10. Beginning today, treat everyone you meet, friend or foe, loved one or stranger, as if they were going to be dead at midnight. Extend to each person, no matter how trivial the contact, all the care and kindness and understanding and love that you can muster, and do it with no thought of any reward. Your life will never be the same again.

11. Laugh at yourself and at life. Not in the spirit of derision or whining self-pity, but as a remedy, a miracle drug, that will ease your pain, cure your depression, and help you to put in perspective that seemingly terrible defeat of the moment. Banish tension and concern and worry with laughter at your predicaments, thus freeing your mind to think clearly toward the solution that is certain to come. Never take yourself too seriously.

12. Never neglect the little things. Never skimp on that extra effort, that additional few minutes, that soft word of praise or thanks, that delivery of the very best that you can do. It does not matter what others think, it is of prime importance, however, what you think about you. You can never do your best, which should always be your trademark, if you are cutting corners and shirking responsibilities. You are special. Act it. Never neglect the little things.

13. Welcome every morning with a smile.Look on the new day as another special gift from your Creator, another golden opportunity to complete what you were unable to finish yesterday. Be a self-starter. Let your first hour set the theme of success and positive action that is certain to echo through your entire day. Today will never happen again. Don't waste it with a false start or no start at all. You were not born to fail.

14. You will achieve your grand dream, a day at a time, so set goals for each day-not long and difficult projects, but chores that will take you, step by step, toward your rainbow. Write them down, if you must, but limit your list so that you won't have to drag today's undone matters into tomorrow. Remember that you cannot build your pyramid in twenty-four hours. Be patient. Never allow your day to become so cluttered that you neglect your most important goal-to do the best you can, enjoy this day a nd rest satisfied with what you have accomplished.

15. Never allow anyone to rain on your parade and thus cast a pall of gloom and defeat on the entire day. Remember that no talent, no self-denial, no brains, no character, are required to set up in the fault-finding business. Nothing external can have any power over you unless you permit it. Your time is too precious to be sacrificed in wasted days combating the menial forces of hate, jealousy and envy. Guard your fragile life carefully. Only God can shape a flower, but any foolish child can pull it to pieces.

16. Search for the seed of good in every adversity. Master that principle and you will own a precious shield that will guard you well through all the darkest valleys you must traverse. Stars may be seen from the bottom of a deep well, when they cannot be discerned from the mountaintop. So will you learn things in adversity that you would never have discovered without trouble. There is always a seed of good. Find it and prosper.

17. Realize that true happiness lies within you. Waste no time and effort searching for peace and contentment and joy in the world outside. Remember that there is no happiness in having or in getting, but only in giving. Reach out. Share. Smile. Hug. Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself.

I Resign

I Resign

Author Unknown

I am hereby officially tendering
my resignation as an adult.

I have decided I would like to accept the
responsibilities of an 8-year-old again.

I want to go to McDonald's and think
that it's a four star restaurant.

I want to sail sticks across a fresh mud
puddle and make ripples with rocks.

I want to think M&Ms are better than
money because you can eat them.

I want to lie under a big oak tree and run a
lemonade stand with my friends on a hot summer day.

I want to return to a time when life was simple.

When all you knew were colors,
multiplication tables, and nursery rhymes,
but that didn't bother you, because you
didn't know what you didn't know and you didn't care.

All you knew was to be happy because you
were blissfully unaware of all the things
that should make you worried or upset.

I want to think the world is fair.

That everyone is honest and good.

I want to believe that anything is possible.

I want to be oblivious to the complexities of life
and be overly excited by the little things again.

I want to live simple again.

I don't want my day to consist of computer crashes,
mountains of paperwork, depressing news,
how to survive more days in the month than there
is money in the bank, doctor bills, gossip,
illness, and loss of loved ones.

I want to believe in the power of smiles, hugs,
a kind word, truth, justice, peace, dreams,
the imagination, mankind, and making angels in the snow.

So... here's my chequebook and my car keys,
my credit cards and all my responsibility.

I am officially resigning from adulthood.

And if you want to discuss this further,
you'll have to catch me first,
'cause,

"Tag! You're it."
