World Cup 2010 :Dream celebrated, nightmare lamented

"The dream has come true," said the newspaper El Pais on its website as an exultant Spanish press hailed the country's first ever FIFA World Cup™ triumph. The newspaper declared 11 July as "a historic day for Spanish sport".

"Spain, Spain, Spain!" screamed the daily El Mundo. "This World Cup has crowned one of the best teams of all time."

"Iniesta took us up into heaven," said the sports daily Marca on the midfielder who scored the crucial extra-time goal that gave Spain a 1-0 win over the Netherlands. "We suffered, but it was worth it," it said.

Another sports paper, AS, said "Spain deserved its victory against a Dutch team that never stopped pushing us throughout the match."

'The dream is over'
The Dutch media, meanwhile, reflected online on Sunday night on the "trauma" of the defeat by Spain which it said had plunged the country in "deep mourning".

"Third trauma for Oranje," read the lead story of the popular De Telegraaf daily, recalling the losses against Germany in 1974 and Argentina in 1978 on the only two other occasions the Netherlands contested the FIFA World Cup Final. "The World Cup in South Africa will enter Dutch history as the third football trauma," it said.

Spain's Andres Iniesta "plunged the team and the Netherlands into deep mourning" with his extra-time goal, said the Algemeen Dagblad newspaper. "After a blood-curdling evening in Soccer City, the world title remained just out of reach of the Orange XI," it added. "Spain were too good in the final, even it if only came to fruition in the second half of extra time."

"The dream is over, the Netherlands did not become world champions," said the public broadcaster NOS, next to a photograph of striker Wesley Sneijder seated on the ground with tears in his eyes.

World Cup 2010 : Spain over Germany!

World Cup 2010 : Spain over Germany!

It's going to be a first World Cup finals for 2008 Euro champs Spain as it edged Euro rival Germany , 1-0 in their Semis match! As expected ,the match proved to be a thriller with the deciding goal scored off a header by Carles Puyol from a corner by Xavi in the 74th.

It was certainly an intense first half although Spain dominated it at 58%-42% possession with its trademark crisp passing plays that stifled Germany's swift attacking offense. The Germans had a few opportunities though off some breakaways but these were repulsed by the tight Spanish defense . Germany's breaks in the 1st half were highlighted by Trowchoski's 30-yard strike that was foiled by GK Iker Casillas and a Mezut Ozil breakaway from a pass by Klose near the end of the half that was dangerously thwarted by Sergio Ramos.

Unlike their spectacular wins against England and Argentina , this time ,the expected German blitzkrieg and counter-attacks never rolled past the Spaniards' lightning fast defensive wall.

It was still a tough seesaw battle in the 2nd half. Spain had more chances to score first but German defense was quick to set up and GK Neuer was unflappable.Until that fatal header by Puyol that breached Germany's erstwhile impenetrable defense; thus, ending their title hopes and breaking the hearts of scores of Deutcsh fans !

It may be the first and only goal so far in the tournament for the struggling Puyol but it was more than enough to bring La Roja to its first World Cup finals!

So it's now down to La Roja vs Oranje for the World Cup 2010 finale in Johannesburg on Sunday , July 11! Interestingly , both never won the World Cup before although Netherlands almost won it in Germany 1974(1-2 vs Germany) and Argentina 1978(1-3 vs Argentina in extra time). On the other hand,Spain's highest finish was 4th place (Brazil 1970).

Which team will be able to live the dream of a first ever World Cup title? What's your pick on Sunday ? Red or Orange?

I see a Euro 2008 reprise by Spain...'though I could be wrong!

World Cup 2010: Netherlands books first Finals slot

World Cup 2010 : Netherlands books first finals slot!
images from FIFA.com

Netherlands is in the WC 2010 Finals! Yes ! The Oranje out scored the La Celeste of Uruguay in a classic thriller , 3-2 !

The Dutch scored first as early as the 18th minute on captain Giovanni Van Brockhorst's left-footed strike breaking off from the left side of the pitch. Uruguay never gave up and levelled the count four minutes before the first half ended when La Celeste captain Diego Forlan curled a left-footed strike that deflected off Heitinga's head and confused the Dutch GK.

The second half proved to be a thriller as both sides started strong with attacking opportunities .Uruguay almost scored on Perreira's hit from the left and Forlan's free kick parried by GK Stekelenberg.
Moments later , Netherlands struck gold on the 70th with a 20-yard spin shot from the ever dangerous Sneijder that deflected off Pereira's thigh .

Robben then doubled the lead (3-1) on the 73rd with a textbook header from a brilliant cross from Kuyt. Robben's header proved to be the winning goal!

Uruguay frantically looked for goals to rally from then on until Pereira scored off a free kick inside three minutes of stoppage time . Final score , 3-2!

So it's Netherlands winning a thriller and moving on to the Finals as I correctly predicted. Now , let's wait for and enjoy another Semis thriller in the too difficult to call Spain - Germany match. Will Spain's suave passing game outlast Germany's blitzkrieg game? Your guess is as good as mine...

It might just be a repeat of the 2008 Euro finals though!

World Cup 2010:Spain edge past resolute Paraguay

Spain edge past resolute Paraguay
from FIFA.com

Spain set up a potentially thrilling semi-final meeting with Germany but the European champions had to do it the hard way, requiring a lone second-half strike from David Villa to claim a 1-0 win over a resilient Paraguay 1-0 at Johannesburg’s Ellis Park. The goal saw Villa take an outright lead in the race for the adidas Golden Boot with five goals but the match was as much a tale of two failed spot-kicks, one for each side.

Vicente del Bosque fielded an unchanged Spanish line-up to that which defeated neighbours Portugal 1-0 four days ago. Conversely, Paraguay coach Gerardo Martino made six changes to the team which squeezed past Japan on penalties. Left out were his trio of misfiring strikers, with Roque Santa Cruz, Edgar Benitez and Lucas Barrios all consigned to the bench.

Both sides went into the match aiming for new heights. Spain clinched a top-four finish in 1950 in a round-robin final stage but they have never competed in a FIFA World Cup™ semi-final, while Paraguay had already achieved a first by progressing past the Round of 16.

If Spain were feeling complacent, then one of the new faces in La Albirroja’s forward line, Jonathan Santana, provided an early wake-up call by forcing Iker Casillas into a save in the opening minute. Paraguay didn’t allow Spain to settle and successfully disrupted their normally crisp passing game during the first half. The in-form Villa only rarely found space on the left flank in the early stages, while at the other end Nelson Valdez looked dangerous whenever Paraguay made forays forward.

Spain midfielder Xavi took matters into his own hands on the half-hour mark with a wonderful snap-shot; the dipping volley from 25 yards clearing the crossbar with goalkeeper Justo Villar scrambling. Minutes later at the other end, Santana narrowly failed to connect with a diving header from a Claudio Morel cross. Valdez then had the ball in the net four minutes before the break only to see his effort disallowed for offside as Paraguay finished the first half in a positive frame of mind.

The second half commenced in similar fashion to the first period, with neither goalkeeper under threat until a remarkable period around the hour-mark. The drama began when Gerard Pique wrestled Oscar Cardozo to the ground as a corner, Paraguay’s first of the night, was played in from the left. Cardozo looked set to give La Albirroja a stunning lead from the penalty spot against the European champions only for skipper Casillas to rescue his side with a superb diving save to his left.

David Villa of Spain celebrates after he scores his side's first goal with team mate Francesc Fabregas

Within 60 seconds, Antolin Alcaraz was deemed to have bundled over Villa in the penalty area and Spain had their own chance from the spot. Xabi Alonso buried his spot-kick but Spanish joy was shortlived, with a retake ordered for encroachment. This time Villar dived low to his left and parried Alonso’s effort, and Paraguay scrambled the rebound to safety.

Minutes later, Andres Iniesta hit a curling effort that was well blocked by Villar, and it was indeed to be the Barcelona midfielder who proved the difference in the decisive moment of the match seven minutes from time. Budweiser Man of the Match Iniesta made a driving run from midfield, teeing up Pedro, whose shot hit Villar’s right-hand post before rebounding to Villa. The Spain No7 accepted the gift, placing his effort against the left-hand post but eventually nestling into the net, but only after rebounding off the opposite post.

In the final minute, Casillas saved his side with a double block from Santa Cruz and Barrios, while Villa was similarly denied by the impressive Villar in a lighting counter-attack.

World Cup 2010: Germany beats Argentina, 4-0

World Cup 2010: Germany beats Argentina, 4-0

from YAHOO!Sports By Nancy Armour, AP National Writer

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP)—No trash talking needed. Germany was just too good for Argentina.

Miroslav Klose scored twice to move into a tie for second on the all-time World Cup scoring list, and Thomas Mueller and Arne Friedrich added goals to give Germany a resounding 4-0 victory Saturday in the World Cup quarterfinals. As flashbulbs popped, the Germans hugged and high-fived each other before walking around the edge of the field, saluting their fans.

Injured captain Michael Ballack came down to the field, watching from the bench as his teammates celebrated.

“It was absolute class,” Germany coach Joachim Loew said.

Hard to argue with that.

Germany will play the winner of Paraguay-Spain in the semifinals Wednesday in Durban. This will be Germany’s third straight trip to the semis and its 12th overall—nobody has more.

It was a surprisingly meek end for the Argentines, whose dominant run had given fans hope this might be a team capable of reaching the final for the first time since 1990, when Diego Maradona led them on the field. Now the coach, Maradona took a slow walk to midfield after the game, hands jammed in his pockets, while several of his players broke down in tears.

“To lose like that is very painful,” forward Carlos Tevez said. “We played badly and sometimes when you make mistakes you go home.”

Argentina and Germany have had a testy relationship since trading World Cup titles in back-to-back finals 20 years ago, and it’s been downright ugly lately.

After Germany eliminated Argentina on penalty kicks four years ago, also in the quarterfinals, the two teams exchanged punches and kicks in a scuffle. A few team officials even got involved in the scrape.

Germany didn’t wait for the game to get its digs in this time, with Bastian Schweinsteiger on Wednesday accusing the Argentines of lacking respect for opponents and referees. Captain Philipp Lahm chimed in a day later, essentially calling Argentina a bunch of hotheads.

The trash talking appeared to be carefully orchestrated, intended to ignite Maradona’s infamous temper and distract his team. Or, perhaps, to put the refs on notice.

Turns out, Germany didn’t need the head games.

Argentina had been one of the tournament’s darlings, with Maradona’s every move causing a stir and superstar Lionel Messi showing you don’t need to score to be sublime. The Argentines rolled into the quarterfinals as one of only two teams to win its first four games—the Netherlands was the other—and had been so powerful they never trailed.

No wonder there was a star-studded crowd on hand at Green Point Stadium, with German chancellor Angela Merkel, Mick Jagger, Leonardo DiCaprio and South Africa’s own Charlize Theron all spotted in the VIP seats.

But Germany showed that Argentina doesn’t have the lock on flair in South Africa.

Its spacing, pace and flat-out stingy defense made the Argentines look out of sorts all afternoon. The Albiceleste didn’t get their first shot on goal until the 33rd minute, and any time they appeared on the verge of making something happen, the German defense shut it down.

It was enough to make Maradona clutch his fists in agony, looking as if he was physically pained. The sight of the German offense couldn’t have made him any happier.

Germany has now scored four goals in three of its five games, and routed England and Argentina by a combined score of 8-1. Those numbers are better suited for PlayStation than the World Cup.

“They did what we knew they were capable of doing,” Tevez said.

Klose, making his 100th appearance for Germany, was simply masterful in the second half. With Germany clinging to a 1-0 lead and unable to get that all-important insurance goal despite several chances in the first half, Klose showed the skill that’s made him one of the most prolific players in German history.

In the 68th minute, Lukas Podolski crossed the ball from just beyond the box, and Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero and defender Nicolas Burdisso were powerless to stop it as it sliced between them. Klose got control of the ball in front of the goal and effortlessly tapped it into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.

Klose let out a roar and slid along the goal line as his teammates ran to congratulate him. Merkel stood up and applauded, accepting congratulations from South African president Jacob Zuma.

And Klose wasn’t done. In the last minute of regulation, Klose volleyed in a cross from Mesut Oezil from no more 10 yards. Klose did a somersault while Merkle beamed and the German fans kicked off the postgame party.

“What he has already shown is of the very highest level,” Loew said. “It is entering history.”

The two goals give the 32-year-old Klose four in South Africa, tying him for the tournament lead. He now has 14 in three World Cups, tying him with German great Gerd Mueller for second place on the all-time list. Brazil’s Ronaldo holds the World Cup record with 15 goals.

Klose also is second to Mueller on Germany’s all-time list with 52 goals. Mueller scored 68.

Europe vs South America !

Yes! World Cup 2010 fans are going to see a Europe vs South America match in the first Semis on July 7 in Cape Town!

As expected , Uruguay, the much higher seed based on FIFA World rankings, beat Ghana!

But not after the game had to be settled on penalty shootouts (0-0,e.t.0-1,1-1)(PSO 4-2)! The Black Stars of Ghana struck gold first on Sulley Muntari's curling shot blasted from 38 yards at extra time in the first half. Uruguay , however, equalized on Diego Forlan's free-kick near the left corner in the 55th minute that fooled GK Kingson.

Regulation ended with the game still undecided at 1-1 ; thus ,it went to extra time !

Ghana missed the chance to win the match in extra time after Gyan 's penalty kick in the dying seconds just hit and flew past the bar.The penalty kick was awarded after a Suarez intentional ball slap at the goal mouth, as shown in the following video:

With the game still at 1 all after thirty minutes of extra time, it then went to penalty shoot outs that settled the final score at 4-2 mainly on successful saves by Uruguayan keeper Muslera .

Joy and sorrow!

In the Netherlands - Brazil match , it seemed that the Dutch started the game with a man less as its defense was harassed by Brazil's frenetic and unceasing offensive juggernaut right from kick-off! After a series of threatening passes ,a beautiful lead pass to Robinho from midfield enabled him to pierce through the heart of Dutch defense and gave Brazil the go-ahead goal only ten minutes in the game!

Felipe Melo after a sorry own-goal header and a red-card

The Dutch, however, never gave up and fought back to level the count at 1 all after Sneijder blasted from far up in the left that was accidentally headed in by Melo in the 53rd! With the match tied , the Dutch regained their confidence while Brazil lost not only its focus but also its swagger ! It was anybody's game from thereon . Sneijder then headed the winner off Kuyt's back flip header from a Robben corner kick with 22 minutes remaining to give the Netherlands its Semis ticket to the dismay of the cocky and over confident Brazilians! Compounding Brazil's problem was the ejection of Felipe Melo after foot stamping a Dutch player( Robben?) not long after Sneijder's header.

Sneijder celebrating his winning header

And so , its going to be the Netherlands against Uruguay for the first Semis match on July 7 at Cape Town!

In the meantime ,for the rest of the Quarters, it's efficient Germany against smooth-playing Argentina at 10 pm tonight ! Later, in Johannesburg at 2:30 am on July 4, it's going to be heavyweight Spain against unfancied but tough Paraguay!

It's going to be another thriller between Germany and Argentina. Germany is the slight favorite for this match although Argentina may draw inspiration from Brazil's loss to move on to the Semis ! Spain should breeze through Paraguay for a historic game against either Germany or Argentina on July 8 in Durban!

So what's your call for tonight's games?

World Cup 2010: Ghana pay the penalty

Ghana became the final African team to say goodbye to the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, losing in a dramatic penalty shoot-out to Uruguay after a 1-1 quarter-final draw at Johannesburg's Soccer City. Goalkeeper Fernando Muslera saved efforts from Stephen Appiah and Dominic Adiyiah, before Sebastian Abreu converted the decisive spot-kick for the South Americans, who reach the last four for the first time since 1970.

The Black Stars will have to be content with having become just the third side from the continent to make the quarter-final stage, although they could have won the match with the final kick of extra time after Luis Suarez handled a goal-bound effort on the line. But with Suarez sent off, their top scorer, Asamoah Gyan, smashed a penalty off the bar that would have tipped the scales to the Africans after Sulley Muntari and Diego Forlan had scored either side of half-time.

Uruguay started the match on the front foot, looking dangerous from dead-ball situations and through the dynamic duo of Forlan and Suarez up front. Suarez had the first real chance in the 11th minute when he beat a Ghanaian defender down the the left. He cut into the box but blasted his shot right at goalkeeper Richard Kingson.

Kingson was the hero for the west Africans twice in short succession. In the 18th minute, from Forlan's corner, he reacted quickly to keep out the ball after it deflected off John Mensah and was seemingly destined for the back of the net. Seven minutes later, he rescued another defender, this time Isaac Vorsah, who missed a tackle allowing Suarez in on goal. But the net-minder just got his fingertips to Suarez's effort to push it over acrobatically.

The Black Stars then settled into the match and only narrowly missed going ahead twice near the half-hour mark. From Ghana's first corner, Vorsah headed just wide of the post. A minute later, Gyan skimmed the other post after a strong run and cross from Kevin Prince Boateng. The Portsmouth midfielder almost opened the scoring himself in spectacular fashion in the 45th minute, but his overhead kick in front of goal spun off his foot. However, the west Africans got their breakthrough on the stroke of half-time as Muntari scored with a curling 35-yard shot that seemed to deceive the goalkeeper before finding the left-hand corner.

But if they ended the first period on a high, the Black Stars started the second on a low as Forlan's free-kick from near the left corner of the box fooled Kingson with its swerve in the 55th minute and bulged the net. The Atletico Madrid hit-man continued to play with confidence and in the 63rd minute he brought the ball down well on the left side of the box in a dangerous position. His cross beat Kingson, but Suarez, who had three goals coming into the match, could only volley into the side-netting at the far post.

As the match opened up and both teams searched for a winner, Suarez had another good opportunity in the 71st minute but from a tight angle on the left he could not beat Kingson, who punched over. Uruguay then threatened twice from Forlan free-kicks. First, he screamed in a shot that beat the keeper but went into the side-netting and next he found Suarez in the box, but the Ajax man's header was tipped over.

Ghana had the clearest opportunities in extra time. Gyan flashed an open header over the bar in the 110th minute, and five minutes later, defender Andres Scotti did just enough to scramble the ball away when it looked like the Ghanaian would score. Boateng almost won it minutes from time, but his header screamed agonisingly wide. And then at the death, from a free-kick into the box, Suarez blocked Appiah's shot on the line only to then stop Adiyiah's headed follow-up with his hand to set up Gyan's penalty miss.

With the gasps of a stunned Soccer City still ringing in the ears, Gyan bravely stepped up to immediately convert the first penalty in the shoot-out. Pereira missed his spot-kick for the Uruguayans, but two consecutive saves by Muslera set up Abreu to be the hero.

World Cup 2010 : Dutch fightback buries Brazil

The Netherlands came from behind to break Brazilian hearts and take a huge step towards a third FIFA World Cup™ final appearance. Trailing at half-time to Robinho's early goal in Port Elizabeth, Bert van Marwijk's men drew level through Felipe Melo's own goal before Wesley Sneijder headed the winner with 22 minutes remaining. Brazil ended the game a man short after Felipe Melo's dismissal as, like in Germany four years ago, the South Americans, unbeaten since last October, saw their dream of a sixth world crown dismantled at the quarter-final stage.

For the Dutch, this was their fifth straight win at these finals and leaves them one victory short of a first Final appearance since they finished runners-up twice in the 1970s. They will travel to Tuesday's Cape Town semi-final against Uruguay or Ghana as favourites despite the suspensions of Gregory van der Wiel and Nigel de Jong. History will be on their side too, given the winners of their three previous FIFA World Cup meetings with Brazil marched on to the Final each time.

Yet it was not the Dutch, but Brazil who looked likely to prevail in the first 45 minutes. Robinho had already had one effort ruled offside when he broke the deadlock in the tenth minute. Advancing unchecked from inside his own half, Felipe Melo played a ball straight through the centre of the Dutch defence from the halfway line. Robinho, free of his marker Van der Wiel and played onside by Ooijer, was in the clear and he tucked a first-time finish beyond Maarten Stekelenburg.

The Dutch sought an immediate reply when Kuyt tested Julio Cesar with a low drive but Brazil were carrying the greater threat and, after 25 minutes, they came close to a second. From a half-cleared corner, Dani Alves, out on the right, drove in a low cross and Juan got there first only to shoot over from close range. Robinho then wriggled away from two orange shirts on the left, gave the ball to Luis Fabiano and his flick set up Kaka whose curling shot was bound for the top corner before Stekelenburg reached out his right arm to palm the ball away.

Sneijder's winning header

The teams' 1994 quarter-final, won by Brazil, produced five second-half goals and this game grew as a contest after the restart. Second-best in the first half, the Dutch drew level in the 53rd minute. Sneijder had already miscued an attempted volley when, following a short free-kick with Robben, the Inter midfielder swung in a cross from out on the right. Julio Cesar and Felipe Melo got in each other's way with the midfielder unwittingly flicking the ball on into the net.

Michel Bastos, booked before the break and under pressure from Robben, now made way for Gilberto Melo but Brazil's self-assurance was fading. Although Kaka guided a volley just past the post, the Dutch soon had their second goal. It came from the head of Sneijder who profited from slack marking in the six-yard box to nod home his third goal of the finals after Kuyt had flicked on Robben's corner. Brazil's prospects dimmed further with 17 minutes remaining with Felipe Melo’s red card for a stamp on Robben, now a constant nuisance to the South Americans. In a frantic finish it might have got even worse for Dunga's men but Sneijder scuffed his shot straight at Julio Cesar.

World Cup 2010 : Quarterfinals Cast complete !

Only eight teams are left in the World Cup 2010 after two weeks of fierce competitions!

Of the eight, four are from traditional powers South America , three are from fancied Europe and only one from host continent Africa!

Quarter-finals
Netherlands v Brazil
Uruguay v Ghana
Argentina v Germany
Paraguay v Spain

All the quarterfinalists topped their respective groups except Ghana which was runner-up to Germany in Group D.Only Group C,topped by the USA(beaten by Ghana)and England(booted out by Germany),had no quarterfinalists.

For purposes of comparing the teams' performance in the run-up to the World Cup 2010,here are their World and respective Zonal rankings as of May 2010 per FIFA:

1. Brazil ( # 1 CONMEBOL)
2. Spain ( # 1 UEFA)
4. Netherlands ( # 3 UEFA)
6. Germany ( # 5 UEFA)
7. Argentina ( # 2 CONMEBOL)
16.Uruguay ( # 3 CONMEBOL)
31.Paraguay ( # 5 CONMEBOL)
32.Ghana ( # 6 CAF )

With the exception of the Uruguay - Ghana match ,it looks like the rest of the quarerfinals are UEFA against CONMEBOL : the best of Europe versus the powerhouses of South America! Techniques vs artistry ?

North America (USA, Mexico and Honduras from CONCACAF), Asia (Australia,South Korea,Japan and North Korea from AFC) and the Oceania-Pacific(New Zealand from OFC) had all their teams way-laid by their South American, European and African rivals !

A look at the Quarterfinals pairings show who may be slight favorites to make it to the SEMI-FINALS based on their rankings! Barring any upsets,we predict the following to move on to the semis:
A)Uruguay,the higher seed over Ghana, should make it easily ;
B)Germany and Argentina match is hard to call but Germany may pull it off and progress ;
C)Brazil is expected to breeze through the Netherlands though an upset is possible ;
D)Spain is the hands down favorite and should advance over Paraguay

Given the assumptions above,we can look forward to the matches in the Semis as pre-scheduled by FIFA:
Scenario 1) Winner D-Spain vs Winner B-Germany

Scenario 2) Winner A-Uruguay vs Winner C-Brazil

Under the preceding scenarios, a Europe vs South America finals might just be possible after all!

Needless to say , anything is possible in this World Cup and I may have called it all wrong!

World Cup 2010:Dutch, Brazil book meeting in style

Dutch, Brazil book meeting in style (from FIFA.com)

Dutch, Brazil book meeting in style

Brazil and the Netherlands lived up to their status as the day's favourites by easing to respective wins over Chile and Slovakia. The duo will now meet in an intriguing-looking quarter-final at Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth on Friday.

That encounter will be the third time in the last five FIFA World Cups™ that the two sides have met in the knockout phase. The Brazilians emerged victorious on the two previous occasions, winning 3-2 in the last eight at USA 1994 and 4-2 on penalties in the semi-finals of France 1998.

Brazil's class of 2010 were hugely impressive in booking their place in the last eight again, surging to an emphatic 3-0 defeat of Marcelo Bielsa's Chile at Ellis Park in Johannesburg, the setting for their FIFA Confederations Cup final triumph last year. Producing some compelling football at times, A Seleção once again proved lethal in front of goal, taking their chances with aplomb.

Falling some way short of the standards they set in the group phase, La Roja suffered the same fate that befell them at France 1998, when they lost 4-2 to Brazil in the Round of 16. For a team that had entertained high hopes of reaching the quarter-finals for only the second time in their history, it was a sad end to a tournament that had promised much.

In the day's first game, the Netherlands confirmed their title aspirations with another convincing display. A combative Slovakia were no match for the Dutch as they chalked up a 2-1 triumph, their fourth win in four games in South Africa. The last time the Oranje put together a run like this in the FIFA World Cup was at Germany 1974, when they lost to Franz Beckenbauer's West Germany in the Final.

Though Bert van Marwijk's men have yet to hit the aesthetic heights reached by the Clockwork Orange, Arjen Robben's first start of the tournament gave them an extra dimension up front, especially when linking up with Wesley Sneijder. The two conjured up the first goal, the Inter Milan midfielder playing a long ball over the top of the Slovakia defence for Robben to scamper on to, cut inside, and rifle home. Sneijder added a second late on to secure the Netherlands a place in the quarter-finals for the fifth time in the last nine FIFA World Cups.

Results
Netherlands 2-1 Slovakia
Brazil 3-0 Chile

Goal of the day
Brazil 2-0 Chile, Luis Fabiano, 38 mins: Receiving a headed pass from Luis Fabiano in the middle of the pitch, Robinho took off down the left before squaring to Kaka just outside the box. The Real Madrid midfielder's cute first-time pass took out Chile’s central defenders at a stroke and allowed the waiting Fabuloso to skip round Claudio Bravo and roll the ball home.

One to remember
Dutch keeper Maarten Stekelenburg kept his side ahead thanks to a superb reflex save from Robert Vittek with 23 minutes remaining in Durban. Receiving a pass just inside the box, the big centre-forward turned and unleashed a fierce drive that brought the very best out of Stekelenburg, his one-handed stop proving the highlight of another assured display between the sticks.

Quote of the day
"We are proud at having reached the last 16 but the better team got through to the next round. At least with that penalty we can head home a little bit happier," Vladimir Weiss, Slovakia coach.

Stat of the day
5 - This is the fifth consecutive time and the 16th in all that Brazil have finished among the top eight sides at the FIFA World Cup. The last time that the five-time world champions went out at an earlier stage was at Italy 1990, when they lost 1-0 to Argentina in the Round of 16. Their other two premature exits came in the group phases at Italy 1934 and England 1966.

Voice of the fans
"I'm still proud of Chile's performance in the WC. I'm sure they will progress and get better, since they are a young side after all. Good job Brazil, you played a great game! I'm excited to see the Netherlands v Brazil match," FIFA.com user kami15.

Have your say
Will Brazil prove too strong for the Netherlands, or can the Dutch avenge previous FIFA World Cup defeats by the South Americans? How satisfied will Chile and Slovakia feel with their respective campaigns?

World Cup 2010 : Changing of the guards due on Team England?

Changing of the guards at Team England?
photos from FIFA.com

Could dusk be falling on the core of English team?

After an embarassing 1-4 loss to rival Germany, English football fans might start asking whether their team was just too slow against Team Germany or Germany's youthful team was just too strong and overpowering?

Well, with the results of the game much too telling to ignore, English fans need not look long and hard for the answers as their team , it seems , was just too slow and weaker in that game against Germany!

Captain Steven Gerrard

Frank Lampard

Age must have caught up with England's "golden generation " of players like John Terry , Frank Lampard, GK David James, Ashley Cole , Joe Cole , Emile Heskey, Jamie Carragher, GK David Green and captain Steven Gerrard , at least at the World Cup stage! While he is officially not a member of the English team but definitely an icon of English football , you can even count in the famous David Beckham in this group as he is no longer a spring chicken at age 32 or so. This batch of players are either in their 30s or older with GK James the oldest at age 40 ...

David Beckham

Wayne Rooney

Let us not forget though that Wayne Rooney ,who is only 25 years old and still has many years of great football ahead of him , is not a part of this "golden generation" of English football. His performance in this tournament though was sub par!

In contrast , Germany relied mostly on its core of much disciplined youngsters mostly from its football academy ! To name just a few , the German team had Thomas Mueller, Mesut Ozeil, Lucas Podolski,Holger Badstuber for its firepower . Of course , Miroslav Klose, while no longer a youngster at 32 is the center piece of its swift attacking game .

As you might have noticed during the game , Germany's goals were off the break away and counter attacks which England failed to solve! Of course , you may blame faulty goal keeping, poor defending, lack of focus, over confidence or attitude problems but what's glaring was that the English players failed to match the speed , passing skills and efficiency of the much younger and better conditioned German team! While England enjoyed an advantage with its experience and skills , it obviously had no match for the young legs and superb conditioning of the Germans!

These to me cost England its early exit from the World Cup 2010!

An exit from future World Cups, too ,for the likes of Terry, Lampard, Gerrard , James, et al?

Where to , now , England?

World Cup 2010: Argentina oust Mexico

Tevez shines as Argentina oust Mexico
from FIFA.com

Carlos Tevez of Argentina celebrates scoring the opening goal

Argentina set up another FIFA World Cup™ quarter-final against Germany by overcoming Mexico 3-1 at Johannesburg's Soccer City Stadium. Carlos Tevez emerged as the hero with a brace of goals, while Gonzalo Higuain was also on target as Diego Maradona's Albiceleste set up a rematch against their 2006 conquerors.

The Mexicans ultimately proved no match for their clinical South American opponents, yet it all started so promisingly for Javier Aguirre's side, with Carlos Salcido rattling the crossbar with a stunning long-range drive after just eight minutes. There was another lucky escape for Argentina just a minute later, when Andres Guardado drilled in a shot from the edge of the box that spun away from the far post just as the net looked set to bulge.

Maradona's side were hardly lacking in attacking menace themselves, however, and Lionel Messi soon embarked on one of his trademark elusive runs before attempting a chip over Oscar Perez that the Mexico keeper judged well. Messi's hunt for a goal at South Africa 2010 continues, but it was not long before the Barcelona talisman played a key role as another of Argentina's star forwards opened his tournament account.

Tevez might have thought his chance had gone when Perez raced out to block bravely at his feet, but Messi was quick-witted enough to return the ball towards goal, where the Manchester City striker was waiting to head home. Breaking the deadlock enabled Argentina to take a firm grip on proceedings, and within seven minutes that hold was strengthened as Mexico reached for the self-destruct button.

Quite what Ricardo Osorio was thinking when he played a square pass to the feet of Higuain is unclear, but it was a gift the Real Madrid striker readily accepted, coolly dragging the ball around the grounded Perez before side-footing into the empty net for his fourth goal of the tournament. Even with the best part of an hour remaining, it was difficult to envisage Mexico finding a way back into this match, and Argentina could have been out of sight altogether by half-time had Higuain not headed wastefully wide with the goal at his mercy. Maradona's men are capable of scoring at any time though, and from any situation – as Tevez proved six minutes into the second half.

The Albiceleste No11 benefited from a fortuitous break 25 yards from goal, but there was no luck involved in what followed, with Tevez lashing an unstoppable drive into the top-right-hand corner for one of the goals of the tournament. Mexico must have realised the game was up at this stage, but it was to their credit that they continued to attack with conviction, and they should have pulled a goal back on 63 minutes when Javier Hernandez headed over when it seemed easier to score.

The Manchester United-bound youngster made amends with 19 minutes remaining, however, brilliantly turning Martin Demichelis on the edge of the box before rifling a stunning left-foot shot into the roof of the Argentinian net. It would prove scant consolation for the crestfallen Mexicans, but while El Tri return home with their dreams dashed, Argentina can begin plotting revenge against some familiar foes.

World Cup 2010 :Impressive Germany power past England

Thomas Mueller (R) of Germany celebrates scoring with team mate Mesut Oezil (L)

Germany's youthful side delivered a striking statement of intent by overwhelming old rivals England 4-1 in Bloemfontein to take their place in the last eight of the FIFA World Cup™.

Joachim Low's side built a two-goal lead through early goals from Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski and although Matthew Upson reduced the deficit before the break, the Germans made sure of their quarter-final place when Thomas Muller concluded two lightning breakaways with a quick-fire double midway through the second half. While Germany can look forward with confidence to a quarter-final meeting with Argentina or Mexico, England will go home to lick their wounds and reflect on yet another FIFA World Cup defeat by their old nemesis.

It was a lapse of concentration which allowed Germany to take the lead in the 20th minute, the goal coming after a spell of prolonged England possession. Manuel Neuer's long goal-kick upfield should have been dealt with by England’s central defenders, but Klose, back from suspension, got between John Terry and Upson, outmuscling the latter before poking the ball past David James with his outstretched right boot.

While having plenty of the ball, England were creating little in the way of genuine scoring opportunities, with only a Gareth Barry shot from distance which went straight at Neuer. Indeed, Germany should have doubled their advantage on the half-hour when Sami Khedira combined well with Muller to set up Klose, who fired straight at James. Yet Die Nationalelf did not have to wait too long for their second goal as Muller floated a delightful ball into the path of the unmarked Podolski. With England's defence stretched, the Cologne man had the time to recover from a poor first touch and produce a left-footed finish that squeezed through the legs of the goalkeeper and just inside the far post.

England pulled a goal back in the 37th minute when a short Lampard corner from the right was played to Gerrard who crossed into the box. Upson, atoning for his earlier error, rose highest above the Germany defence and with Neuer stranded, powered a header into the net. Meetings between these two sides often provide talking points and this one's came 60 seconds later when Lampard's shot from the edge of the box struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced down, with the referee ruling the ball had not crossed the goalline.

England started the second half strongly with Gerrard hitting a right foot shot just wide in the opening minutes and Lampard rattling the crossbar with a free-kick 30 yards from goal. However, Germany increased their advantage in the 67th minute through a counter-attack. Lampard's free-kick hit the German wall and, with England having committed men forward, they were left exposed as Schweinsteiger broke quickly before playing a delightful ball for Muller, who had started the breakaway, to fire past James.

Germany's fourth was more or less a carbon copy of their third. With England deep in their opponents' half, searching for a way back into the game, Germany won possession on the edge of their box and sprayed the ball to Ozil on the left. The midfielder outpaced Barry and played in Muller to sidefoot home from close range. England, to their credit, never gave up and only a fine one-handed save by Neuer from Gerrard stopped them from reducing their deficit – the heaviest in their FIFA World Cup history.

World Cup 2010: Uruguay boots out South Korea in knock-out round

Suarez double downs South Koreans
Luis Suarez of Uruguay celebrates scoring ( from FIFA.com )

Luis Suarez struck twice as Uruguay beat Korea Republic 2-1 in Port Elizabeth to reach the FIFA World Cup™ quarter-finals for the first time since 1970. The South Koreans pushed hard but Lee Chung-Yong's header in the second half was not enough with Suarez scoring both early and late on for the South Americans.

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez made one change to the team that defeated Mexico 1-0 in their final group match, with Diego Godin replacing Mauricio Victorino at the back. Back at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, where his side beat Greece 2-0 in their opening game, Korea Republic coach Huh Jung-Moo made a notable change to his midfield, with winger Kim Jae-Sung making his first start in place of Yeom Ki-Hun.

The South Koreans got off to a bright start, with their captain Park Ji-Sung running through the middle of the park to the edge of the area only for Diego Lugano to cut out his attempted through-pass. Minutes later, they came desperately close to taking the lead, Park Chu-Young's curling free-kick from 20 yards smashing the left post as Fernando Muslera stood watching helplessly. Instead it was La Celeste who drew first blood in the eighth minute, when an unmarked Suarez, lurking on the right side of the area, turned the loose ball into an empty net after Jung Sung-Ryong had failed to deal with Diego Forlan's low cross from the left.

The Taeguk Warriors probed away, looking for holes in the stubborn Uruguay defence that had not conceded a goal in the first round. Park Ji-Sung surged down the left but saw his low cross blocked by a timely intervention, then Park Chu-Young tried his luck with an effort from 25 yards that went just wide of the left post. It was Cha Du-Ri's turn next but he saw his audacious shot from 30 yards sail just over the crossbar.

With the rain pouring down in the second half, Kim Jung-Woo almost paid for a sloppy pass across the back, with Suarez intercepting but failing to trouble Jung with a tame shot. At the other end, Lugano's attempted clearance from a Lee Jung-Soo cross fell into the path of Park Chu-Young, who fired a powerful volley over the bar. Park Ji-Sung then managed to connect with a Cha cross from the right, but Muslera did well to hold on to his header, jumping to his left.

South Korean coach Huh had no other option but to reinforce the attack, and brought striker Lee Dong-Gook on for Kim Jae-Sung on the hour mark. The Asian side finally broke through after 68 minutes, when Lugano's headed clearance from Ki Sung-Yueng's free-kick fell to an unmarked Lee Chung-Yong, who headed home the equaliser from close range to finally end Muslera's lengthy unbeaten run. However, the Uruguayans fought back. Suarez saw his shot from an acute angle parried over by Jung, before the Ajax forward then miscued his header with only the keeper to beat. But the Uruguay No9 made no mistake when the ball came to his way on the edge of the box following a Forlan corner, sidestepping a white shirt and curling a spectacular shot in off the far post to make it 2-1.

The Koreans responded by bringing on another forward, Yeom Ki-Hun, for midfielder Ki, and within two minutes, Lee Dong-Gook spurned a glorious chance to equalise as the Jeonbuk Motors marksman saw his low shot half-stopped by Muslera before Lugano cleared the ball as it trickled slowly towards the net. With that, the South Koreans' final opportunity had passed as La Celeste held on to book their place in the last eight.

World Cup 2010 : Good bye France and Italy!

2006 was their year and the World Cup was their stage but that was 4 long years ago!

Today, France and Italy are way out of the great World Cup 2010 center pitch in South Africa! The heroes and main casts in the World Cup 2006 finals are just plain zeroes in this year's World Cup!

Team France 2010 World Cup

France was the first to get the boot ,that is , figuratively and literally! Its record: a dismal first game draw against Uruguay (0-0) in the first round ! Then 2 consecutive defeats . First ,against Mexico (0-2) and then to hosts South Africa (1-2). That's only 1 modest goal in three WC games ! From the 1998 champs and 2010 first runner-up, all they can score is a measly 1 goal? You've got to be kidding, man !

Obviously, the core of 1998 champion team and 2006 first runner-up no longer
had the legs to kick ass all comers nor the will to simply give the opposition
stiff competition! And so, it might be the end of road for greats like Thiery Henry , Djibril Cisse , William Gallas and even Nicolas Anelka who are all in their 30's! Also, Franck Ribery and Patrice Evra may no longer be fixtures of future "Les Bleus" team!

Too bad , it's adieu for now , France!

Team Italy World Cup 2010

Italy was the next giant to fall in the 2010 World Cup! My,oh my and how they fell hard and loud with a thud heard all over the world! Just like the French, the Azzuris never won a game in this year's edition of the World Cup although they scored a total of four goals---or at least a goal per game! They drew their games against Paraguay and New Zealand in embarassing fashion -particularly against New Zealand which was playing in only its first World Cup in 28 years!

But look at this , the defending champs and heavy favorite Italians conceded five damaging goals! More so, three goals were conceded in the crucial winner take-all game against tough Slovakia (2-3)! Alas , we probably have seen the last time of the likes of the great Fabio Cannavaro, veteran Gennaro Gattuso, banger Gianluca Zambrotta and even gentle giant Gianlugi Buffon playing in future World Cups for Italy!

Now we say arrividerci Italia!

For France and Italy , thanks for now!
