Create the Ultimate Sex Playlist
from Men's Health
It’s no surprise to anyone who has downloaded Lil Wayne’s latest: The
lyrics in today’s Billboard Hot 100 songs have more references to sex
in them now than they did in 1959, according to a new study in the
journal Sexuality and Culture.
You already read that you shouldn’t take sex advice from popstars,
but what about throwing on a playlist of sexy songs during the deed?
Will it get her in the mood, or just creep her out? We looked into the
research.
Can Music Make You Horny?
When researchers evaluated the effects of sexy songs on signs of
arousal—such as blood flow to the penis or vagina—they found evidence
only that music increased heart rate. This isn’t specific to sex but
certainly wouldn’t hurt if you were trying to get in the mood, says
psychologist Heather Hoffmann, Ph.D., from Knox College. Her findings
were presented in June at the Neurosciences and Music Conference in
Edinburgh, Scotland.
And as for the lyrics that make your grandma blush? They could make
you think of hot women, which could set off sex hormones and prime your
penis for action, says Louann Brizendine, M.D., a neuropsychiatrist and
author of The Male Brain. (A better option: Our list of the 101 Hottest Women of 2011.)
How Music Turns Her On
A study by Canadian researchers earlier this year found that like
sex, the music we love lights up the brain’s reward center. Dopamine
floods this part of your brain both when you orgasm and when you hear a
favorite tune.
So can music enhance pleasure during sex? “The dopamine rush from
sexual experience completely outweighs and overwhelms anything that
comes from music—it’s like a tsunami relative to a small little wave,”
says Dr. Brizendine.
That said, it could definitely start the waters
moving during foreplay, especially for women, she says.

Make a Better Sex Playlist
Hoffman and her research partner—music theorist David Bashwiner,
Ph.D., from the University of New Mexico—also surveyed college students
to see what songs they find sexiest during sex. Then, they analyzed the
tunes to identify common characteristics.
Use the results to your advantage and choose these tunes—or songs like them—for your date-night playlist:
Hella Good, No Doubt: Gwen Stefani sounds like she’s
standing right next to you, telling you to “keep on dancing”—probably a
veiled sexual reference. Relaxed vocals where the singer is close to the
microphone let you hear moistness and breathiness, which is sexier than
if they sound like they’re yelling.
Similar songs: Glory Box, Portishead; Crawl Home, Desert Sessions with PJ Harvey; Drive, Melissa Ferrick
Psychotic Girl, The Black Keys: This indie-rock tune clocks
in at right around 80 beats per minute—one of two tempos deemed sexiest,
probably because they’re also common in hip movements and other rhythms
during sex. The other is 130 bpm (prime example: I Like It, by Enrique Iglesias).
Similar songs: Sex (I’m a), Lovage, and Dirt, Depeche Mode, on the slow side; Right Round, FloRida, on the fast side
Rude Boy, Rihanna: Well, besides the fact that she’s smoking
hot, Rihanna uses not one but two vocal styles here. In the loud
sections, she arouses (“Can you get it up?”), while the quieter parts
create intimacy (“I like the way you touch me there”). A similar effect
occurs when sweet or whispered vocals float over a hard-rocking
background.
Similar songs: 60 Feet Tall, The Dead Weather; My Prodigy, Juliana Hatfield; Melody, Serge Gainsbourg
