That super-productive feeling you get from a hot cup of joe may be mostly in your head.
Researchers in the U.K. gave daily coffee drinkers decaf, but told
them it was caffeinated. An hour later the java lovers did a series of
mind games testing attention and reaction time.
The results: The decaf
group performed just as well as those who actually had caffeine in their
drink.
It’s a result of classical conditioning, says study author Lynne
Dawkins, Ph.D., of the University of East London. Cues associated with
the consumption of something—in this case the taste of coffee—can
trigger the same brain chemicals as the substance itself.
However, you have to think you’re drinking caffeine to get
the benefits. Fortunately there’s nothing wrong will a full-caf cup. In
fact, the caffeine in your coffee could ward off Alzheimer’s disease and has a variety of other health benefits.
