Walking on the Water

Jn 6:16-21
16When it was evening, [the] disciples [of Jesus] went down to the sea, 17embarked in a boat, and went across the sea to
Capernaum. It had already grown dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18The sea was stirred up because a strong wind was blowing. 19When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they began to be afraid. 20But he said to them, “It is I. Do not be afraid.” 21They wanted to take him into the boat, but the boat immediately arrived at the shore to which they were heading.

Reflection:
The disciples of Christ
are not exempted from the trials and storms of life. Sometimes good
Christians complain: “Why is God allowing this to happen to me when I am
so faithful to him?” God did not promise his followers that they would
never be in the fire or in the water. But he does promise that he would
be with them in the fire and in the water. And if Jesus (who is God) is
with us, even though he seems to be absent, there is nothing to fear. We
do not stop striving and struggling, as the disciples did not stop
rowing, but the Lord will bring us to shore. As Blessed John Henry
Newman prayed, “Lead, kindly light, amid the encircling gloom; lead thou
me on!”
When in deep trouble, say to Jesus,
“Lord, it is you, I am not afraid. I trust in you.”
