Out-of-the-box things to do for Valentine’s Day

Out-of-the-box things to do for Valentine’s Day

(They're not that mushy.)

As always, restaurants and flower shops are going to make a killing on the Mushiest Day of the Year. If Christmas is for kids, then Valentine’s Day is for people in love. At least, that's what it seems like. Then again, who’s to say we have to stick to that definition?

Indeed, there are other things you can do for Valentine’s Day that won’t be too mushy, too stressful, or too costly. We’ve listed some “cheap” activities that will make the day easier—and, perhaps, more fun—for everyone.

1. Stay home. Yes, we’re serious. If there are staycations, then surely there are “home dates.” You and your partner can just cook something together. (If you don’t cook, then have some food delivered.) Then, you can just talk and watch TV. To make things more memorable, you can watch old movies or play old-fashioned board games. How can you resist a nostalgic bonding session right in the comfort of your own home. Spare yourself from the traffic, the overcrowded restaurants, and long lines at the movies.

2. Have a chick flick or an action flick festival. Who says you have to be part of a couple to celebrate Valentine’s Day? Gather your fellow singletons, serve some food, and watch all your favorite movies. Being with your friends should remind you that they’re your “significant others,” too.

3. Go on a road trip. Call friends and family members you haven’t seen for some time and then just drive or take a bus out of town for an instant road trip. You don’t have to pick a destination right away, you can make up your mind when you want to. Reconnecting with the people you love in such an unplanned manner is a refreshing antidote to Valentine dates that are “planned to death.”

4. Pamper yourself. Who says you’re a “loser” if you’re not out on the town on Valentine’s Day? It’s time you gave your body some love and rest. Go to a spa, get a massage, or just catch up on your sleep. You’ll thank yourself for it.

5. Sing your heart out. If you’re decidedly one of those rabid anti-Valentine’s Day people, curb your negative thoughts and just let it all out—through singing. Call up your friends and go to a videoke place to sing all the cheesy love songs and heartbreak hits you can think of. Catharsis is worth a few busted eardrums.

Bottom line: You don’t have to break the bank to show love. In this instance, it really is the thought that counts. Always remember that the best gift you can give to your loved ones is your heart. (Yes, we’re mushy and we know it.)
