The Crucifixion of Jesus

Jn 19:25-27
25Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. 26When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.” 27Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.
Reflection:
Standing by the cross.
Unlike yesterday’s feast, today’s memorial presents Jesus on the cross.
Jesus’ mother, Mary, and the others with her exemplify the iconic
stance of faithful disciples with regard to the suffering Christ. They
stand by the cross, the ancient form of torture and execution. They are
in the background, but their suffering and pain is no less. They
identify with the agony of Jesus.
As
a mother, Mary is always united with Jesus. From start to finish she is
there for Jesus and with Jesus. It is love that unites her to him.
Because of her love, she understands Jesus, accepts his ways, and
empathizes with him. Even when at the foot of the cross Mary is
helpless, at a loss before the extreme suffering of her beloved Son, she
continues to be there, giving the gift of her presence and
identification with Jesus’ passion.
Can you stand by a loved one’s hospital bed
when he or she is terminally ill?
What do you feel during the last moments
of someone you know?
