Herod’s Opinion of Jesus

Lk 9:7-9
7Herod
the tetrarch heard about all that [Jesus was doing], and he was greatly
perplexed because some were saying, “John has been raised from the
dead”; 8others were saying, “Elijah has appeared”; still others, “One of the ancient prophets has arisen.” 9But Herod said, “John I beheaded. Who then is this about whom I hear such things?” And he kept trying to see him.
Reflection:
He kept trying to see Jesus.
Herod hears many good things about Jesus and he wants to see him. Why?
It is not because of admiration or acceptance. Surely, it is not because
of faith. Herod wants to see Jesus out of curiosity. Herod had John
beheaded. He thinks that John has returned to haunt him, to make him pay
for his grievous crimes. He wants to see and know Jesus so he can cast
away his fear and anxiety.
The
Gospel challenges us to strive to know Jesus. Many people around us
speak of “miracles,” changed lives, blessings, wonderful teachings, high
morality, high ideals, and the like. What do we know about Jesus?
Knowing Jesus demands personal commitment resulting from a personal
experience of him. To know Jesus is to surrender our comforts, give up
our luxuries, set aside our personal ambitions, and offer ourselves for
his service. To see Jesus is to be sorry for our sins and to grant
forgiveness to those who are asking for our love and forgiveness. To
know and see Jesus is to help and heal, to serve and save, and effect
positive changes around us.
Let us know and see Jesus.
He is present and alive in us
and in people around us,
especially those we are called to serve and save.
