Jn 5:33-36
[Jesus said to the Jews,] 33“You sent emissaries to John, and he testified to the truth. 34I do not accept testimony from a human being, but I say this so that you may be saved. 35He was a burning and shining lamp, and for a while you were content to rejoice in his light. 36But
I have testimony greater than John’s. The works that the Father gave me
to accomplish, these works that I perform testify on my behalf that the
Father has sent me.”
Reflection:
He was a burning and shining lamp. Prophets
and heroes have flames in their hearts burning with love for their
people. All creation is a lamp shining of God’s grandeur. Jesus was
burning with compassion for the poor and love for his Father. And we
all rejoice and warm ourselves in their fire! We walk in their light,
we hope in their flame, and we sometimes catch the fire.
So what is on fire in our hearts? What
keeps us burning, or what or whose fire do we take care lest it be
extinguished by apathy or by those who do not want to walk in the
light?
What lamp do we pass on to others? Whose light do we admire and
hold up? Are we on fire? Or are we contented to rejoice in the light of
others? Or do we dare catch fire and set ourselves and others on fire?
Our lives are candles that need to be lighted and spent, otherwise we
lie uselessly soft and bent in a cabinet.
Put off all your electric lights at home today and just use candles as light.
