²⁹ The next day, he saw Jesus coming towards him and said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world.

³⁰ It was of him that I said, "Behind me comes one who has passed ahead of me because he existed before me."

³¹ I did not know him myself, and yet my purpose in coming to baptise with water was so that he might be revealed to Israel.'

³² And John declared, 'I saw the Spirit come down on him like a dove from heaven and rest on him.

³³ I did not know him myself, but he who sent me to baptise with water had said to me, "The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and rest is the one who is to baptise with the Holy Spirit."

³⁴ I have seen and I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.'

³¹ After saying this, what can we add? If God is for us, who can be against us?

³² Since he did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for the sake of all of us, then can we not expect that with him he will freely give us all his gifts?

³³ Who can bring any accusation against those that God has chosen? When God grants saving justice

³⁴ who can condemn? Are we not sure that it is Christ Jesus, who died -- yes and more, who was raised from the dead and is at God's right hand -- and who is adding his plea for us?

³⁵ Can anything cut us off from the love of Christ -- can hardships or distress, or persecution, or lack of food and clothing, or threats or violence;

³⁶ as scripture says: For your sake we are being massacred all day long, treated as sheep to be slaughtered?

³⁷ No; we come through all these things triumphantly victorious, by the power of him who loved us.

³⁸ For I am certain of this: neither death nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nothing already in existence and nothing still to come, nor any power,

³⁹ nor the heights nor the depths, nor any created thing whatever, will be able to come between us and the love of God, known to us in Christ Jesus our Lord.

²¹ Yahweh, treat them as your name demands; as your faithful love is generous, deliver me.

²² Poor and needy as I am, my wounds go right to the heart;

³⁰ With generous thanks to Yahweh on my lips, I shall praise him before all the people,

Luke 13:31-35

³¹ Just at this time some Pharisees came up. 'Go away,' they said. 'Leave this place, because Herod means to kill you.'

³² He replied, 'You may go and give that fox this message: Look! Today and tomorrow I drive out devils and heal, and on the third day I attain my end.

³³ But for today and tomorrow and the next day I must go on, since it would not be right for a prophet to die outside Jerusalem.

³⁴ 'Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How often have I longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you refused!

³⁵ Look! Your house will be left to you. Yes, I promise you, you shall not see me till the time comes when you are saying: Blessed is he who is coming in the name of the Lord!'

It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick. Matthew 9:9-13

⁹ As Jesus was walking on from there he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office, and he said to him, 'Follow me.' And he got up and followed him.

¹⁰ Now while he was at table in the house it happened that a number of tax collectors and sinners came to sit at the table with Jesus and his disciples.

¹¹ When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, 'Why does your master eat with tax collectors and sinners?'

¹² When he heard this he replied, 'It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick.

¹³ Go and learn the meaning of the words: Mercy is what pleases me, not sacrifice. And indeed I came to call not the upright, but sinners.'

Matthew 20:1-16a

¹ 'Now the kingdom of Heaven is like a landowner going out at daybreak to hire workers for his vineyard.

² He made an agreement with the workers for one denarius a day and sent them to his vineyard.

³ Going out at about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market place

⁴ and said to them, "You go to my vineyard too and I will give you a fair wage."

⁵ So they went. At about the sixth hour and again at about the ninth hour, he went out and did the same.

⁶ Then at about the eleventh hour he went out and found more men standing around, and he said to them, "Why have you been standing here idle all day?"

⁷ "Because no one has hired us," they answered. He said to them, "You go into my vineyard too."

⁸ In the evening, the owner of the vineyard said to his bailiff, "Call the workers and pay them their wages, starting with the last arrivals and ending with the first."

⁹ So those who were hired at about the eleventh hour came forward and received one denarius each.

¹⁰ When the first came, they expected to get more, but they too received one denarius each.

¹¹ They took it, but grumbled at the landowner saying,

¹² "The men who came last have done only one hour, and you have treated them the same as us, though we have done a heavy day's work in all the heat."

¹³ He answered one of them and said, "My friend, I am not being unjust to you; did we not agree on one denarius?

¹⁴ Take your earnings and go. I choose to pay the lastcomer as much as I pay you.

¹⁵ Have I no right to do what I like with my own? Why should you be envious because I am generous?"

¹⁶ Thus the last will be first, and the first, last.'

Reading 2, Phil 1:20c-24, 27a

²⁰ all in accordance with my most confident hope and trust that I shall never have to admit defeat, but with complete fearlessness I shall go on, so that now, as always, Christ will be glorified in my body, whether by my life or my death.

²¹ Life to me, of course, is Christ, but then death would be a positive gain.

²² On the other hand again, if to be alive in the body gives me an opportunity for fruitful work, I do not know which I should choose.

²³ I am caught in this dilemma: I want to be gone and to be with Christ, and this is by far the stronger desire-

²⁴ and yet for your sake to stay alive in this body is a more urgent need.

²⁷ But you must always behave in a way that is worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come to you and see for myself or whether I only hear all about you from a distance, I shall find that you are standing firm and united in spirit, battling, as a team with a single aim, for the faith of the gospel.

In prosperity people lose their good sense...

⁶ They trust in their wealth, and boast of the profusion of their riches.

⁷ But no one can ever redeem himself or pay his own ransom to God,

⁸ the price for himself is too high; it can never be

⁹ that he will live on for ever and avoid the sight of the abyss.

¹⁰ For he will see the wise also die no less than the fool and the brute, and leave their wealth behind for others.

¹⁷ when he dies he will take nothing with him, his wealth will not go down with him.

¹⁸ Though he pampered himself while he lived -- and people praise you for looking after yourself-

¹⁹ he will go to join the ranks of his ancestors, who will never again see the light.

²⁰ In prosperity people lose their good sense, they become no better than dumb animals.

Matthew 18:21-35

²¹ Then Peter went up to him and said, 'Lord, how often must I forgive my brother if he wrongs me? As often as seven times?'

²² Jesus answered, 'Not seven, I tell you, but seventy-seven times.

²³ 'And so the kingdom of Heaven may be compared to a king who decided to settle his accounts with his servants.

²⁴ When the reckoning began, they brought him a man who owed ten thousand talents;

²⁵ he had no means of paying, so his master gave orders that he should be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, to meet the debt.

²⁶ At this, the servant threw himself down at his master's feet, with the words, "Be patient with me and I will pay the whole sum."

²⁷ And the servant's master felt so sorry for him that he let him go and cancelled the debt.

²⁸ Now as this servant went out, he happened to meet a fellow-servant who owed him one hundred denarii; and he seized him by the throat and began to throttle him, saying, "Pay what you owe me."

²⁹ His fellow-servant fell at his feet and appealed to him, saying, "Be patient with me and I will pay you."

³⁰ But the other would not agree; on the contrary, he had him thrown into prison till he should pay the debt.

³¹ His fellow-servants were deeply distressed when they saw what had happened, and they went to their master and reported the whole affair to him.

³² Then the master sent for the man and said to him, "You wicked servant, I cancelled all that debt of yours when you appealed to me.

³³ Were you not bound, then, to have pity on your fellow-servant just as I had pity on you?"

³⁴ And in his anger the master handed him over to the torturers till he should pay all his debt.

³⁵ And that is how my heavenly Father will deal with you unless you each forgive your brother from your heart.'

 

Reading 2, Rom 14:7-9

⁷ For none of us lives for himself and none of us dies for himself;

⁸ while we are alive, we are living for the Lord, and when we die, we die for the Lord: and so, alive or dead, we belong to the Lord.

⁹ It was for this purpose that Christ both died and came to life again: so that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.

³⁷ Because he loved your ancestors and, after them, chose their descendants, he has brought you out of Egypt, displaying his presence and mighty power,

²⁷ 'For the Son of man is going to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will reward each one according to his behaviour.

²⁸ In truth I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of man coming with his kingdom.'

²⁴ He said in reply, 'I was sent only to the lost sheep of the House of Israel.'

²⁵ But the woman had come up and was bowing low before him. 'Lord,' she said, 'help me.'

²⁶ He replied, 'It is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to little dogs.'

²⁷ She retorted, 'Ah yes, Lord; but even little dogs eat the scraps that fall from their masters' table.'

²⁸ Then Jesus answered her, 'Woman, you have great faith. Let your desire be granted.' And from that moment her daughter was well again.

²⁹ When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands, as he was coming down the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face was radiant because he had been talking to him.

³⁰ And when Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, the skin on his face was so radiant that they were afraid to go near him.

³¹ But Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the leaders of the community rejoined him, and Moses talked to them,

³² after which all the Israelites came closer, and he passed on to them all the orders that Yahweh had given to him on Mount Sinai.

³³ Once Moses had finished speaking to them, he put a veil over his face.

³⁴ Whenever Moses went into Yahweh's presence to speak with him, he took the veil off until he came out. And when he came out, he would tell the Israelites what orders he had been given,

³⁵ and the Israelites would see Moses' face radiant. Then Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak to him next time.

⁴⁵ 'Again, the kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls;

⁴⁶ when he finds one of great value he goes and sells everything he owns and buys it.

"I give you a heart wise and shrewd as no one has had before and no one will have after you. "

¹⁰ It pleased Yahweh that Solomon should have asked for this.

¹¹ 'Since you have asked for this,' God said, 'and not asked for long life for yourself or riches or the lives of your enemies but have asked for a discerning judgement for yourself,

¹² here and now I do what you ask. I give you a heart wise and shrewd as no one has had before and no one will have after you.

⁴⁸ When it is full, the fishermen bring it ashore; then, sitting down, they collect the good ones in baskets and throw away those that are no use.

⁴⁹ This is how it will be at the end of time: the angels will appear and separate the wicked from the upright,

⁵⁰ to throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.

⁵¹ 'Have you understood all these?' They said, 'Yes.'

⁵² And he said to them, 'Well then, every scribe who becomes a disciple of the kingdom of Heaven is like a householder who brings out from his storeroom new things as well as old.'

Reading 2, Rom 8:28-30

²⁸ We are well aware that God works with those who love him, those who have been called in accordance with his purpose, and turns everything to their good.

²⁹ He decided beforehand who were the ones destined to be moulded to the pattern of his Son, so that he should be the eldest of many brothers;

³⁰ it was those so destined that he called; those that he called, he justified, and those that he has justified he has brought into glory.
