Praise of the Father
Lk 10:21-24
Jesus rejoiced [in] the holy Spirit and said, “I give you praise,
Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these
things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the
childlike. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. 22All things
have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is
except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and anyone to
whom the Son wishes to reveal him.”
23Turning to the disciples in private he said, “Blessed are the eyes
that see what you see. 24For I say to you, many prophets and kings
desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you
hear, but did not hear it.”
REFLECTIONS
ALL THINGS HAVE BEEN HANDED OVER TO ME. Aside from the mission of the
Twelve disciples, a unique story in Luke is the sending of the 70 or 72
disciples. The Alexandrian manuscripts of the gospels contain variant
references: some mention 70, while others indicate 72 disciples. In
reference to Gn 10 that lists around 70 nations and races evolving from
Noah’s three sons after the deluge, the number attests to the
universality of Jesus’ mission.
Now in prayer before the heavenly Father, after the return of the
70/72 from their mission, Jesus declares: all is grace! The
effectiveness of the 70/72 in their commissioned task is grace; the
childlike openness of those who received them and the gospel they
preached, is grace. Jesus goes so far as to declare: that we see and
hear what others have not seen or heard is also grace!
We are called to be “Advent persons” who point others to Jesus as did
the 70/72 disciples. Let us think of family members and friends we
should lead closer to Jesus.
Graces surround us daily, and it is divine grace that we are alive.
