Mk 3:7-12

7Jesus withdrew toward the sea with his disciples. A large number of people [followed] from Galilee and from Judea. 8Hearing what he was doing, a large number of people came to him also from Jerusalem, from Idumea, from beyond the Jordan, and from the neighborhood of Tyre and Sidon. 9He told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, so that they would not crush him. 10He had cured many and, as a result, those who had diseases were pressing upon him to touch him. 11And whenever unclean spirits saw him they would fall down before him and shout, “You are the Son of God.” 12He warned them sternly not to make him known.

A large number of people came to him. With his teaching and healing work, Jesus proclaims a God who saves. People flock to Jesus and begin to know a loving God. They want to touch him, believing that they will be able to touch God as well. Even unclean spirits declare Jesus as “the Son of God.” The circle of Jesus’ followers is gradually getting bigger and bigger. It prefigures the expanding circle of God’s beloved, not only focused on the 12 tribes of Israel but encompassing the neighboring towns of Israel.

“I will speak to him about you.” Saul’s son Jonathan is a true friend of David. When Saul speaks of his intention to kill David whose fame as a warrior is gaining, Jonathan takes up David’s cause, declaring that David has done no wrong and reminding Saul of the victory against the Philistines that David won for all Israel. Jonathan’s plea reverses Saul’s intent and brings David back to his service.

How have we used our sphere of influence
to promote the goodness
and the love of God in Jesus?
