Lk 5:12-16

12There was a man full of leprosy in one of the towns where [Jesus] was; and when he saw Jesus, he fell prostrate, pleaded with him, and said, “Lord, if you wish, you can make me clean.” 13Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him, and said, “I do will it. Be made clean.” And the leprosy left him immediately. 14Then he ordered him not to tell anyone, but, “Go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed; that will be proof for them.” 15The report about him spread all the more, and great crowds assembled to listen to him and to be cured of their ailments, 16but he would withdraw to deserted places to pray.

Lord, if you wish, you can make me clean. Jesus heals a man full of leprosy because he wills it, in response to the sick man’s plea. Even if Jesus forbids the man to spread the news and orders him to perform instead the prescribed ritual that he may be declared clean by the temple priest, the result is an irruption of God’s glory and the spread of Jesus’ fame. Whether he is in prayer or in active healing ministry, Jesus is aware that everything he does is to testify to the greatness of God.

“There are three who testify, the Spirit, the water, and the blood” (First Reading). The three are of one accord as they testify to the greatness of God who has given us eternal life in the Son.

As Christians, we realize that our gift of faith must lead us to make our loving God and our compassionate brother Jesus known to others so that they may also have a meaningful life in the Spirit.

What healing story has struck you
and moved you to believe in the greatness of God?
