Jesus and His Family

Mk 3:31-35

³¹[Jesus’] mother and his brothers arrived. Standing outside they sent word to him and called him. ³²A crowd seated around him told him, “Your mother and your brothers [and your sisters] are outside asking for you.” ³³But he said to them in reply, “Who are my mother and [my] brothers?” ³⁴And looking around at those seated in the circle he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. ³⁵[For] whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.” 

MY BROTHER AND SISTER AND MOTHER. The kin of Jesus come to him while he is teaching, and they ask for him. Jesus takes this opportunity to teach about belonging to his family. His mother and brothers and sisters are the ones who do the will of God. Jesus teaches us about God who makes us one family and assures us that God is our loving Father.

This is the same God before whom David, in the First Reading, dances with abandon. The ark of the Lord is brought up amid shouts of joy and the sound of the horn. David brings burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. He then distributes to everyone a loaf of bread, a cut of roast meat, and a raisin cake. With this gesture, David treats everyone in Israel as a member of the household of the Lord.
