Mk 4:21-25

21[Jesus] said to [the crowd], “Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket or under a bed, and not to be placed on a lampstand? 22For there is nothing hidden except to be made visible; nothing is secret except to come to light. 23Anyone who has ears to hear ought to hear.” 24He also told them, “Take care what you hear. The measure with which you measure will be measured out to you, and still more will be given to you. 25To the one who has, more will be given; from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”

Reflection:

Jesus said to the crowd. Today’s brief Gospel is full of pithy sayings. Let us take only the first one, which is in the form of a question: “Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket or under a bed, and not to be placed on a lampstand?” The best commentary on this is what Jesus says in the Sermon on the Mount: “… your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father” (Mt 5:16).

The word of God we have received, and every other gift in the form of talent or treasure, should be used for God’s glory and the salvation of people. We should not allow any gift we have received from God to go to waste.

Have you been using your gifts
for God’s glory and the good of people?
