Lk 1:39-45

39During those days Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, 40where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the holy Spirit, 42cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. 43And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. 45Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.”

Reflection:

Mary set out and traveled. The Gospel narrates the visit of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth. It is a picture of happiness. Mary shares her joy with Elizabeth and rejoices in her cousin’s forthcoming motherhood.

The trip is long and tedious, but Mary does not mind the inconvenience. What concerns her is the well-being of her cousin. For Mary, the visit is an errand of caring mercy. She is bringing God’s love, in Jesus, to Elizabeth in her moment of need.

Mary’s loving concern is also shown to all of us. She reaches out to us, no matter how distant we are. Still, let us not make it more difficult for our mother Mary to come to us.

God also visits us. Yet, it is we who run away from him. Why not welcome him in our homes and in our hearts?

Who are the people for whom
I have to go out of my way and help?

I will pray for the following people
