Mk 8:22-26

22When [Jesus and his disciples] arrived at Bethsaida, [people] brought to [Jesus] a blind man and begged him to touch him. 23He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. Putting spittle on his eyes he laid his hands on him and asked, “Do you see anything?” 24Looking up he replied, “I see people looking like trees and walking.” 25Then he laid hands on his eyes a second time and he saw clearly; his sight was restored and he could see everything distinctly. 26Then he sent him home and said, “Do not even go into the village.”

Reflection:

He laid hands on his eyes a second time. Jesus heals the blind man of Bethsaida. But unlike most miracles, the healing is a gradual recovery of sight. The blind man is brought to Jesus who takes the blind man by the hand and leads him outside the village. Jesus lays his hands on the blind man who reports seeing “people looking like trees and walking.” Jesus touches the blind man’s eyes a second time, and the man now sees everything clearly and distinctly.

This progressive recovery of sight signifies the process of conversion—being brought to Jesus, healed, and converted; becoming a disciple, being admonished not to go back to one’s former life, and being sent on mission. It also illustrates the gradual understanding of people, especially of the disciples, about the person and the mission of Jesus.

Name the people in your lifewhom you wish to bring to Jesus. How do you envision doing it?
