11 FOODS AND DRINKS DIET EXPERTS WON'T TOUCH

Food and Nutrition

11 FOODS AND DRINKS DIET EXPERTS WON'T TOUCH

By Dana Leigh Smith
What do ketchup and cereal have in common? Nutritionists won’t eat them.
Imagine that you were given the opportunity to peek into the daily diets of nine top-notch nutritionists and dietitians. What would you take note of? Likely not the array of fresh fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean meats, dairy and healthy fats on their plates—that’s practically a given. What you’d really want to hone in on was all the things they didn’t let pass their lips!
If eaten in moderation, many experts feel there is a place for just about every food in a balanced diet. But as it turns out, there are a number of foods out there that they personally wouldn’t let into their grocery cart, let alone their mouth. Some are in line with what you might expect—but others are pretty surprising (like cereal!). Although, you may not be ready to give up your Frosted Flakes quite yet, get a sneak peak into the eating habits of those who live and breathe nutrition daily.

1
GRANOLA
“One of the leading health food impostors, this common yogurt and ice cream topper has nearly 600 calories, 30 grams of fat, and 24 grams of sugar in one tiny cup. That’s the equivalent of eating not one, but two slices of cheesecake. Which would you prefer? While some granola brands do offer up some nutrition such as fiber, protein and iron, the cons certainly outweigh the pros here. Switch to a lighter alternative like Cheerios or Special K. They pack the same satisfying crunch with a fraction of the calories, fat and sugar.” - Lisa Moskovitz, R.D., founder of The NY Nutrition Group

2
EGG
BEATERS
“Eggs that come out of a container are not a health food. Heat pasteurized and made from factory-farmed eggs, this product is processed so much that makers actually have to add in synthetic vitamins to boost its nutrient density. This is as far removed from a natural egg as you can get.” - Dana James CDN, a nutritionist from Food Coach NYC

3
KETCHUP
“Sure it tastes good on just about everything, but what you might not realize is how quickly the sugar and calories in ketchup can accumulate. Just one measly tablespoon has up to four grams of sugar and 20 calories—which might not seem like a lot—but the average consumer will douse their food with at least four or five. Plus, it’s loaded with high fructose corn syrup, which has been shown to increase appetite and, over time, lead to health problems such as obesity and diabetes. If you really can't live without the stuff, use an all-natural version with no added sugar, chemicals or HFCS.” - Lisa Moskovitz, R.D., founder of The NY Nutrition Group.

4
JUICE
“Juice is just a sugary beverage masked to be a healthy. Although there are some vitamins in it because of its fruit content, some varieties have just as much sugar as a soda. Plus, when you transform produce into juice, you take away its fiber—one of the major benefits of consuming whole fruits and vegetables.” - Leah Kaufman, MS, RD, CDN a New York City-based Registered Dietitian

5
SPAM
“Spam is high in both blood pressure-spiking sodium and artery-clogging fat, which no one really needs to be eating more of. Unless you're saving in for a horrific power outage, there are better canned proteins to choose from!” - Toby Amidor, MS, RD, CDN, President and Founder of Toby Amidor Nutrition

6
COLD
CEREAL
“Most cold cereals are carb-laden, sweet and highly processed. They are definitely not the breakfast of champions—at least not thin champions. If you start your day with a bowl, you will continue to crave carbs as the day goes on. Plus, since it’s not particularly satiating, you will likely be hungry just two hours later.” - Lauren Slayton, MS RD, founder of Foodtrainers

7
FLAVORED
COFFEE CREAMER
“I avoid flavored coffee creamers because they are filled with fake ingredients that can do more harm than the flavor is worth. Packed with partially hydrogenated oils (which are just trans fats in disguise), artificial sweeteners, carrageenan and artificial coloring, this seemingly innocent coffee addiction can raise dangerous LDL cholesterol levels and increase the risk of blood clots and heart attack. The healthier choice would be a half and half that only lists milk and cream as ingredients.” - Gina Consalvo, MA, RD, LDN, Pennsylvania-based owner of Eat Well with Gina

8
CHEESE
FRIES
“When I see cheese fries on the menu, I wonder why the dish even exists. They take a perfectly nutritious potato, deep fry it and then to top it all off, they load it up with salty, greasy, processed cheese. No, thank you.” - Christine M. Palumbo, MBA, RDN, FAND, a Chicago area registered dietitian and nutrition communications consultant

9
HOT
DOGS
“When you’re grilling outside, hot dogs may be the first thing that comes to mind, but they should not be the first thing to hit your plate. Not only are they high in fat, one dog also has more than a quarter of the day’s sodium. Throw this salty dog in a bun and drown it in condiments, and you’ve got yourself a diet disaster. Not to mention, research has shown a correlation between processed meats and colorectal cancer.” - Jim White, R.D., personal trainer and registered dietitian

10
NUTELLA
Nutella is one of those foods that people believe to be healthy because it contains a nut. Although hazelnuts are naturally healthy on their own, they lose their nutrients when they’re transformed into the sweet spread. With over 20 grams of added sugar and only two grams of protein, there’s little reason to indulge.” - Leah Kaufman, MS, RD, CDN a New York City based Registered Dietitian

11
CHEESY
PUFFS
“First they crunch, then they melt in your mouth. Cheesy puffs may be delicious, but the unnaturally bright orange snack should be avoided. Not only do their scary chemicals make them totally addictive, but because they are made up of so much air, the brain can’t tell that the stomach is filling up even though the calories are adding up.” - Libby Mills, MS, RDN, LDN, Spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

THE DANGERS AND SIDE EFFECTS OF DRINKING COKE

Food and Nutrition

THE DANGERS AND SIDE EFFECTS OF DRINKING COKE

can of coca cola

By Dana Leigh Smithhttp://www.eatthis.com/
Russell Brand is to Hollywood as soda is the beverage aisle: They’re both alluring bad-boys, and we just can’t seem to get enough.
Though most of us know that sipping a chemical-laced cola is bad for our health and can make it near-impossible to lose weight, sometimes a craving for an ice-cold can is too difficult to ignore. We get it. But if you’re looking for a way to kick the habit for good we have the answer.
A new infographic created by a former pharmacist breaks down what happens inside the body the first hour after polishing off a can of Coke in five- and ten-minute intervals. And honestly, it's downright horrifying. If this doesn’t help you overcome your cola habit, we’re not sure what will.

AFTER TEN MINUTES...

According to the graphic, ten minutes after your last sip an entire day’s worth of sugar hits your system. The only reason it doesn't make you sick to your stomach is because Coke is filled with phosphoric acid (a chemical used in fertilizer and soap), which cuts the flavor of the sweetness.

AFTER 20 MINUTES...

Your blood sugar spikes, which causes an insulin burst. In response, your liver converts all the sugar it can get its hands on into fat—and right after you’ve downed a Coke, there are at least ten teaspoons worth in your system.

AFTER 45 MINUTES...

Because of all the sugar, you’ll be hit with a surge of dopamine—much like when someone takes heroin.

60 MINUTES AND BEYOND...

Fifteen minutes later, nature is sure to call—and you’ll literally piss away all the electrolytes, calcium (a nutrient that boosts satiety and builds strong bones) and water that your body was about to absorb and utilize. After a bit more time passes, expect a major sugar crash that leaves you sluggish and irritable.

8 More Restaurants to Visit in Marikina

8 More Restaurants to Visit in Marikina

Nov 10, 2014

The Shoe Capital of the Philippines is slowly building a new name for itself. Marikina City has recently become more and more dense with restaurants (as evidenced by the fact that this list has a part 1), serving food that’s easy on the wallet and kind on the tastebuds.

Loosen those belts–your food trips to the east are far from over. Here are 8 more Marikina restaurants that you should check out.

8. Mama Chit’s Coffee House

                                                         Via welscua.blogspot.com

278 J.P. Rizal St. San Roque Marikina City
646 8547 | Facebook
Open from 10am to 10pm Monday to Sunday
Price range: PHP 150-300

Located near the Our Lady of the Abandoned Church, Mama Chit’s Coffee House has become a favorite by Marikina locals and visitors alike.  The Vintage memorabilia create a charming clutter as you consume the crowd favorites: cheeseburgers and sandwiches (don’t just take Kris Aquino’s word for it!). Eating as a group? Try their Family Burger (about eight inches), which costs PHP600.

Two challenges that you may encounter with this place, however: the parking (as you will have to look for a spot on the road) and the full house on weekends.

7. Pan de Amerikana

92 Gen Ordonez Ave Concepcion II Marikina
475 2398 | Facebook
Price Range: PHP 80-200

This is a place where you’ll probably spend an ample amount of time taking pictures. Pan de Amerikana’s menu is not limited to bread—it’s quite famous for its affordable ulam and rice meals as well (from T-bone steak to pancit, sinugba platter to carbonara). A great place to take the kids, who will most likely have a great time walking around the giant chess pieces.

6. Kanto Freestyle Breakfast

6 Aquillina St. cor Col Dovino Sto.Nino Marikina
400 2268 | Facebook
Open 24 hours
Price Range: PHP 100-150

Literally located in a street corner, this no-frills restaurant serves decent, affordable breakfast food such as rice meals (try their New Zealand Tapa and Tuyo and Kesong Puti). Called “Freestyle” because you can customize your meal, for example: eg. bacon + two eggs + garlic rice + tomato pesto). If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous and don’t mind the calories, try their deep-fried Cloud-9 and deep-fried Oreo for dessert.

5. Cafe Lidia

64 Calderon Street,Calumpang, Marikina City
647 7606 | Website
Open from 10am to 11pm Monday to Saturday; 3pm to 10pm on Sunday
Price Range: PHP 150-300

The people behind Cafe Lidia claims that they “did not spend a penny on any marketing scheme,” and that word got around through friends and relatives. This place is great for big groups as well as private functions. You might take a while deciding on what to order (their drinks menu alone has over 30 items), but whatever you do, don’t forget to leave room for dessert–their Sansrival, Dulce de Leche, and Chocolate cakes are simply divine.

4. Mogu Tree Noodle House

60E Lilac St. Hacienda Heights Marikina City
738 6833 | https://www.facebook.com/mogutreenoodlehouse
Open from 11am to 7pm Monday to Sunday
Price Range: PHP 150-250

A DIY noodle place with a twist. Customers can choose from a wide array of noodles (egg, wheat, flour pesto) and toppings (fish and meat balls, crab sticks, shrooms, etc.). You’ll also get to choose between two kinds of soup (plain or laksa). Match this creation–which is served in a clay pot–with the refreshing Grass Jelly drink or Tsing Tao).

3. Crazy Katsu

48 Lilac St. Hacienda Heights, Concepcion Ⅱ, Marikina City
570-3128 | http://www.crazykatsu.com/ | https://www.facebook.com/crazykatsu
Open from 11am to 10pm Monday to Sunday
Price Range: PHP 150 - 250

Katsu (breaded, deep fried meat cutlet) continues to be a hit in Manila. In a span of about three years, several katsu joints have opened in metro, having a varied price range. Crazy Katsu is small, humble joint that is more on the affordable side of the spectrum, but this doesn’t mean that the quality is poor–it’s actually one of the best out there. With a budget of 150-250PHP, you’ll leave the place stuffed to the gills. Bestsellers include the Chicken Katsu, Tonkatsu, Katsu Curry, and Sukiyaki.

2. Rustic Mornings by Isabelo

11 Isabelo Mendoza St. San Roque Marikina City
510 – 6914 |  Website | Facebook
Open from 8am to 4pm Monday to Sunday
Price Range: PHP 300 – 350

Arguably one of the most photogenic restaurants on this list (and the list before it!). There’s indoor dining, but it’s best if you dine al fresco and enjoy the organized clutter of quaint details like wooden tables, recycled lamps, mosaic tiles, and paintings. The place has a price range that is well within reach for most families–perhaps one of the reasons why it’s always busy. Walk-ins are accepted, but it’s best if you call them first, especially if you’re planning to go on a  weekend.

1. Krung Thai

Marikina Public Market, M Cruz Corner WC Paz, Santa Elena, Marikina City
Open from 9:30am to 9:30pm Monday to Sunday
Price Range: PHP 200-300

Located near the city’s public market, Krung Thai offers authentic and affordable Thai cuisine. Some of their best-sellers include Tom Yum, Pad Thai, and seafood fried rice. They have some items that caters to Pinoy taste buds, like the bagoong rice with adobo, green mangoes, and omelette. The corner by the counter has many Thai goodies (chili flakes, chili sauce, clothes, bags) for sale, so you can go shopping, too.

14 Fast Food & Restaurant Employees Confess The One Item You Should Never Order

Food and Nutrition

14 Fast Food & Restaurant Employees Confess The One Item You Should Never Order

People all over the world are starting to be more conscious about the food that they eat. Fast food restaurants are full of food that is literally designed to turn people into addicts. They are often littered with and chemically altered for this purpose alone, despite a number of these foods being proven to be detrimental to human health. Ultimately we do have a choice, but it’s also confusing why these foods even exist given how bad and toxic most of them are, and how they promote so many different diseases. Just think about the intent behind their existence. Do you really think that it is to feed people?

I don’t usually post articles that aren’t completely originally written, but I think this is worthwhile posting, since in my opinion anything that might potentially draw people away from these foods is worthwhile sharing. You never really know with restaurants, some horrible things go on behind the scenes and the food we are served isn’t always what we really think it is.

The following question was posted to Reddit: What should we not order at your restaurant? Why not?

According to the Huffington Post, None of these claims are verified, but they received thousands. Some of these are quite disturbing but not surprising at all.

Anything McCafe At McDonald’s

“I work for McDonald’s and make sure everyone that matters to me never orders anything that comes out of the ‘McCafe’ machine as these are routinely neglected, in practically all the McDonalds. Not only are staff not properly trained in its cleaning and maintenance, at almost every McDonalds I’ve had experience with, the managers in charge of training them don’t know f*** all either…All McCafe beverages run through a horrifically dirty machine – we’re talking 5+ inches of uncleaned, liquid bullshit making up its inside parts.” Envirometh

I personally would not recommend eating anything at McDonald’s:

Do Not Order Hot Dogs At Baseball Games

“I used to work in a baseball park concession stand. The short answer is not to order anything, but if you absolutely have to buy something, don’t buy the hotdogs.

Do not. Buy. The Hot Dogs.

They made it out of the package okay, and might even have been edible after we finished grilling them – and then they went into the water. We kept three pans of water at the back of the grill that held the hot dogs. Any hot dogs left at the end of the day went back into the fridge, and came out again the next day. Me and the other cook put our feet down on throwing out the water and old hot dogs after two full days, but the management didn’t want to let us.” FreakyCheeseMan

 Beans at Taco Bell

“I worked at taco bell a little bit ago and I warn everyone to stay away from both the beans, and the steak. The beans start out looking like cat food, and the directions are, ‘Add water and stir until you can’t see white anymore.’ The steak was just the worst on dish duty. If it would sit too long it would become like hair gel. It was the worst.”-Beefcake21

On Wendy’s Chili

“I used to work at Wendy’s. The meat used in the chili, yeah that comes from the meat on the grill top that expires and dries up that’s put in to a warming drawer until you have enough for a batch of chili, which we first freeze and then thaw the next day. Also if the chili sitting in the warmer doesn’t sell fast enough we just added hot water to it to mix it up.”

Don’t Order Anything Off Of The Starbucks “Secret Menu”

starbucks butterbeer

“Former starbucks worker here. Please don’t order anything off the ‘Secret Menu.’ It doesn’t exist. If you want a snickerdoodle, nuttella, or captain crunch frappuchino (or whatever other overly sugery thing someone has since come out with), know the base drink and the modifications, and order that. If you just say the name, it’s up to the barista to come up with what’s in the drink, and it may not be what the last barista you ordered from put in there.”Stac52

On Movie Theatre Popcorn

“I worked at a theater, don’t get popcorn for the first showing- that’s all just last night’s popcorn put into giant garbage bags and then reheated in the warmers in the morning.

Oh yeah and remember that sticky floor in the aisle of the theater? Well what do you think would happen if you had that at your house. YES THAT’S HOW YOU GET ANTS… and cockroaches, and everything else. Plus it’s in the dark most of the time. It’s like a bug buffet once the lights go out and the movie starts.”YouAteYourParents

Skip The Pasta At Panera, Stick To The Sandwiches

“Panera- pasta; it’s all microwaved, this includes mac and cheese. Smoothies/frozen drinks- nasty base crap that smells and it’s sticky. Cupcakes/coffee cakes- all come frozen. Best items are the real sandwich/ salads. Real ingredients and usually fresh.”President_Pancake

Always Ask For “Fresh” Chicken Nuggets At McDonald’s

“I used to work at McDonalds. If you order, especially chicken nuggets, just ask for them fresh. Otherwise they’ve been just sitting in their container in the heat. They have a timer, but 9/10 times when that timer goes off, people just reset the timer instead of making new ones. This could go on until all the nuggets are sold.”Ritch88

Steer Clear Of Beans At Taco Johns

“Taco Johns reporting for all you mid-westerners. I would steer clear of the beans, at least outside of peak hours, because they sit on the hot table for a long long time and when they dry out, just add water. Everything else is pretty solid though. Worked there a couple years back in 2007-2009 and still love going back to get my fix.”-clamslammer707

BBQ Sandwiches At KFC

“Worked at KFC for ~4 years. The BBQ sandwich is actually made from chicken too old and stale to give to the homeless shelters, so they soak it in BBQ sauce until it can be pulled and then they keep it on the heater for a month.”

The Eggs At Einstein’s

“I worked at Einstein’s bagel place which is basically fast food. Don’t order anything with eggs, they aren’t real eggs and if business is slow they could have been sitting in a container for hours after they are microwaved.”- Thedudeiscj

On Gas Station Slurpees

“Gas station slurpee’s. The amount of mold in those machines would crush your childhood to a pulp.” - MarTank666

The Doughnuts At Dunkin (Warning: This Will Break Your Heart)

“Currently employed at Dunkin doughnuts and it’s sad but true all the doughnuts and baked goods there come to us frozen.”- Ass_in_assasain

Foods that make you smell

Food and Nutrition

Foods that make you smell

Garlic
                                                                                                       (iStock)

You're sitting on a train that’s slightly warm, packed with passengers, and suddenly you get a whiff of "rotten egg" stench.

Stop after stop, the crowd thins out, but that onerous odor remains. You search for the offender as subtly as you can, so you can find a seat in the opposite direction. As your head swivels, you’re hit with that stench again, so strong you could swear it was you.
You nonchalantly dip your head down toward your underarm — wait a minute. It is you. But you didn't even work out today. And you took a shower this morning. And you’re wearing deodorant.

What you eat can directly affect how you smell, and in more ways than just your breath. Scientifically, this boils down to the way your body metabolizes the stinky sulfur compounds found in many foods like garlic, cumin, and asparagus. While smelling like garlic is not new (it is said to ward off both vampires and mosquitos), the stench of asparagus-tainted urine might not be quite as familiar and you may not have even realized that some of the foods on our list could have this effect on you.

If you have a hot date, an interview, or plan to be out in public, you may want to keep these foods off the day’s menu. And if you can't, here are a few tricks to help deodorize nasty smells.

Red Meat

In 2006, researchers from the Czech Republic collected perspiration samples from meat-eating and vegetarian men. They then asked a group of women to identify the foulest odor, based on numerous factors. Overwhelmingly, the vegetarians’ body odor was found to be much more appealing than the meat-eaters’.

Deodorize: A simple way to remove potential stench is to cut out red meat all together. If a vegetarian's life is not for you, try cutting out some meat and replace it with seafood or veggie dinners.

Curry/Cumin

The taste of Tikka chicken may not be worth the lingering stench that comes with it. The aromas of spices such as curry and cumin can make a home for themselves in your pores, and stew for days at a time.

Deodorize: Even a brief brush with cumin can cause a lasting odor. Instead try cardamom, an aromatic seed of a plant from the ginger family, which permeates the body quickly and leaves a fresh aroma.

Garlic

Garlic stink oozes from your skin because allicin, within another sulfur compound called allin, is released when garlic is cut or crushed. Allicin breaks down quickly after consumption and converts to other substances, which cause bacteria to mix with sweat and results in a strong odor.

However, it is said that if you are at dinner and both you and your date consume garlic, you’ll be less likely to notice it. (It’s up to you to take that risk.)

Deodorize: If your underarms become some serious stinkers, apply white or cider vinegar to keep you odor-free throughout the day.

Asparagus

The ripe smell of asparagus crops up in a seemingly harmless way, but tell that to the guy sharing five bathroom
