The actual definition of a true professional will surprise you

A true professional can be defined in many different ways, depending on who is creating the definition. However, the definition provided by Bryan Flanagan in his book Encouragement for the Sales Professional is one that truly, truly strikes a chord. He takes the definition from baseball Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio, who “was known as the ’Yankee Clipper’ because of his skill and grace.”
DiMaggio, a legend in his own right, had the perfect response when asked what motivated him, what his reasoning for playing so hard was. DiMaggio would say that his drive came from this notion, “I always thought there was at least one person in the stands who had never seen me play and I didn’t want to let them down.” That isn’t what you expected, is it?
I always thought there was at least one person in the stands who had never seen me play and I didn’t want to let them down.
This idea of not letting somebody down is an incredible definition of a true professional. Flanagan says this answer is “the secret to his greatness” as well as “the definition of a true professional.” Flanagan has a great point here.
He explains this idea, saying, “A true professional gives her best efforts day in and day out. A true professional invests daily in improving his skills.” The true professional will work their hardest to do what they need to do to be who they need to be to even the most insignificant person or prospect in their life. By preparing for greatness, by preparing to impress even the most clueless of fans, DiMaggio was always holding himself to a standard much higher than his peers. He propelled himself towards greatness by raising the bar each time he stepped onto the field.
A true professional gives her best efforts day in and day out.
“Today, give it your best shot.” Use the train of thought DiMaggio embodied throughout his career, the train of thought that propelled him to greatness and the baseball Hall of Fame. “Today, focus on how you can strengthen your skills and techniques. Today, encourage your peers to be the best they can be.” Live your best life and try with your best effort so that you can have the strongest image, so that you can embody what it really means to be a true professional.
Today, give it your best shot.
“Remember, today you may call on someone who has never seen you at your best… and you don’t want to let them down.” DiMaggio never did, and you never have to either.
