Mt 13:44-46

[Jesus said to his disciples,] 44“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. 45Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. 46When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it.”

A MERCHANT SEARCHING FOR FINE PEARLS. The characters in the Gospel are on the go—searching, finding, and taking possession. A person finds a buried treasure, and a merchant searches for fine pearls. They do not stop until they find and possess the object of their search.

Jesus is like these two characters. But what he seeks is not something valuable at first appearance. Like a good shepherd, he searches for the lost sheep to bring them back to God’s fold. Like a physician, he cures both physical and spiritual ailments of people. The wayward sheep and the deformed human beings are hardly “treasures,” but every human being is precious in God’s eyes. The name of each one is written in the palm of God’s hand. And just as the searchers are filled with joy when they possess what they are looking for, so there is joy in heaven when the sinner repents and the lost is found.

We, too, are people always on the go. Restlessly and tirelessly, we search for something of value from things, ambitions, and accomplishments. Yet nothing is more valuable than a human person.

What is your greatest treasure in life?
Do you value your being human?
