ASUS is intent on getting a better foothold of the local bargain tablet market. The company has announced that its redesigned—think slimmer, lighter form factor and reduced bezels—ASUS Fonepad 7 (FE170CG) just landed in the Philippines. This after introducing a similar dual-SIM product that can make calls, send text messages, and access 3G networks only two months ago.

Whereas the previous Fonepad 7 offers a 7-inch 800 x 1,280 IPS screen with a pixel density of 215 dots per inch, the latest iteration takes a step down to a more lowly 169ppi display of equal size. The same goes for the onboard storage and cameras: the former has 8GB of internal storage, 5- and 1.2-megapixel rear and front sensors; the latter downsizes to 4 gigs of expandable memory and 2-megapixel and VGA sensors. The result is a P5,995 Android Jelly Bean tablet from ASUS, which is among the cheapest telephony-capable devices of its kind. Compare that to the P8,995 price tag on the earlier Fonepad 7. On paper, it sounds like a fair compromise.

The capable 1.2GHz dual-core Intel Atom processor with Hyper-Threading support carries over to the current-gen ASUS Fonepad 7, as well as the 1GB of RAM and 3,950mAh lithium-polymer battery. And as with its predecessor, it comes with 16GB of cloud storage for one year, plus a choice of colored backplates—black, red, blue, and white, in this case.
