Mt 11:28-30

[Jesus said,] 28“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. 30For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

Reflection:

Come to me. Though the Gospel is very short, it is a very uplifting invitation from Christ for us who labor and are heavily burdened. This is no pabalat bunga (pro forma invitation). Nor does it come from a president or head of state. It comes from Jesus Christ, the Son of God, our Savior. He invites us to come to him. There is no cordon sanitaire that can block us from coming to Jesus. He makes himself available; at any time, and wherever we may be, we can come to him. No special appointment, no special place or time needed.

The rest that Jesus gives is altogether special. Only he can give it. He says in another place that he gives us his peace, not as the world gives (cf Jn 14:27). His peace is not the absence of sorrow, pain, or conflict, but the comfort of his presence in any trying circumstance.

Will you respond to Jesus’ invitation NOW?
