Mt 7:6, 12-14

[Jesus said to his disciples,] 6“Do not give what is holy to dogs, or throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them underfoot, and turn and tear you to pieces.
12“Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the law and the prophets.
13“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many. 14How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few.”

Reflection:

This is the law and the prophets. The world has a golden rule: “He who has the gold rules.” Jesus gives the true golden rule: “Do to others whatever you would have them do to you.” This is a rule which, if followed by everyone, will make all human relationships golden.

There is a negative version of this rule, found also in other religions: “Do not do to others what you would not want them to do to you.” This is also good, but it is not enough. The Lord Jesus demands more: not only that we do not do what we do not want others to do to us, but to do to them what we would want them to do to us. It is good not to hurt another, but it better to help another in need.

Follow the golden rule and lead a golden life
even if you do not have gold.
You will be treasured more than gold.
