Jn 16:12-15
[Jesus said to his disciples,] 12“I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. 13But
when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He
will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will
declare to you the things that are coming. 14He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. 15Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.”
Reflection:
When he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth.
This promise of Christ is the basis of the confidence of the Church
that she will continually grow in the knowledge of the unfathomable
riches of Christ’s revelation. Jesus has left us all the truth we need
for our salvation. And the truth that Christ has left us is so rich and
full that it cannot be fully understood even to the end of the world.
But the Church will continue to grow in the understanding of this truth
as the Holy Spirit enables the Church to understand.
The
Holy Spirit is promised not only to the members of the hierarchy, but
to the whole Church, including the ordinary faithful. The Holy Spirit
will assist and enlighten us all, as we read the Bible, pray, study,
discuss, and act together.
Have you experienced learning the meaning
of the Bible’s words from the lips of ordinary people?
