Jn 14:15-16, 23b-26
[Jesus said to his disciples,] 15“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always.
23“Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him. 24Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the Father who sent me.
25“I have told you this while I am with you. 26The
Advocate, the holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name—he will
teach you everything and remind you of all that [I] told you.”
Reflection:
He will give you another Advocate to be with you always.
In all of the four gospels, Jesus sends the disciples (us!) on mission
finally. But he does not want them to go alone. So, he asks them to wait
for the coming of the Holy Spirit, which he promises. The disciples are
to go on mission only with the Holy Spirit. In fact, the Holy Spirit is
the number one Missionary, and we are only his collaborators. In the
Gospel, Jesus, at the Last Supper, promises that he will send another
Advocate, the Holy Spirit, who will teach the disciples everything and
remind them of all that he has said.
The
Holy Spirit, breathed on the disciples in the privacy of the upper room
in Jerusalem (cf Jn 20:22), is given publicly on Pentecost in the form
of tongues of fire.
We
have also received the Holy Spirit! We received him at our Baptism and
Confirmation. Bishops, priests, and deacons received him at their
Ordination. But all of us have received the Holy Spirit. He is the
Spirit of power and of love. Jesus wants us to manifest the power and
love given by his Spirit. The same Spirit has been given us, and is with
us, indeed in us!
