Mk 9:38-40

38John said to [Jesus], “Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us.” 39Jesus replied, “Do not prevent him. There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me. 40For whoever is not against us is for us.”

Reflection:

For whoever is not against us is for us. This is a very important saying from Jesus: There are far more people united to Christ than the total number of registered Catholics or Christians in the world. I have been struck at the many, many good people I have met who are not even Christians. Let us appreciate Christ’s presence in them, too.

We used to regard the adherents of other religions either as rivals or as enemies. We had nothing to do with them, except to protect ourselves from them. Now we realize how they also practice values that come from the grace of Christ. Thus, the Church has promoted peaceful living together with adherents of other religions and collaboration with them in promoting human development, justice, and peace.

Let us learn to live as brothers
and sisters with others.
