The Explanation of the Parable of the Sower
Mt 13:18-23
[Jesus said to his disciples,] 18 “Hear then the parable of the sower. 19The
seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the kingdom
without understanding it, and the evil one comes and steals away what
was sown in his heart. 20The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy. 21But
he has no root and lasts only for a time. When some tribulation or
persecution comes because of the word, he immediately falls away. 22The
seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but then worldly
anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit. 23But
the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and
understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or
thirtyfold.”
Reflection:
The seed sown on… The seed (God’s Word) falls on the soil (audience). But there are different kinds of soil.
When
we are the path, we simply refuse Jesus. We think that we can go on
with our life without him. We do not want to accept correction. Other
people are a burden to us, and serving Jesus is a restriction to our
schedules.
When
we are the rocky ground, we believe Jesus but we do not observe his
words and obey his will. We follow him at first, but we do not remain
faithful until the end.
When
we are the thorns, we know Jesus but we do not want to give him our
time, talents, and treasures. We are cluttered with a multiplicity of
worldly interests.
When
we are the good soil, we are receptive to the values and priorities of
Jesus; we live a life that is rooted in Jesus. So we bear fruit
abundantly.
What kind of soil are we?
What do we produce for God
