Jn 15:12-17

[Jesus said to his disciples,] 12“This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. 13No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. 16It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. 17This I command you: love one another.”

Reflection:

As I love you. Jesus’ whole life is a life of love for us. Because of this love, he came down from heaven and became man; he brought good news to the poor, performed healing miracles, preached words of forgiveness, and taught the way to the Father. For love of us, he suffered, died on the cross, and rose from the dead.

Jesus’ new commandment is that we love one another as he has loved us. It is Jesus’ love that we must give to others. The measure of our love for others is Jesus’ love for us.

If we share Jesus’ love with others, we will be more merciful and compassionate, more patient and forgiving. We will not be callous to other people’s needs. Our life orientation will be to save and not to destroy, to serve and not to dominate, to understand and not to condemn. If we imitate Jesus’ love, we will be more truthful and honest in our relationships, more faithful and responsible in our commitments.
Is not Jesus asking for the impossiblewhen he commands us to love one anotheras he has loved us?
