Jn 16:5-11

[Jesus said to his disciples,] 5“Now I am going to the one who sent me, and not one of you asks me,  ‘Where are you going?’ 6But because I told you this, grief has filled your hearts. 7But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8And when he comes he will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and condemnation: 9sin, because they do not believe in me; 10righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me; 11condemnation, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.”

Reflection:

The Advocate. Jesus speaks of the Spirit as the “Advocate.” Advocate means helper. The Spirit enables us to understand clearly our relationship with Jesus, a relationship that is destroyed by sin. Sin is our refusal to believe in Jesus, to obey him, and to love him.

The Spirit as Advocate helps us repair our broken relationship with Jesus by making us fully understand the works of Jesus. The Spirit opens our eyes to the life-giving sacrifices and sufferings of Jesus. We come to understand how much God cares for us and suffers for us and how much we should be sorry for offending God.

The Spirit helps us realize that we are not condemned but loved; we are not punished but forgiven; we are not lost but saved. The Spirit inspires us to return to God with contrite and renewed hearts.

As we prepare for the celebration of Pentecost, let us ask ourselves: What do we want the Holy Spirit to do for us?

I will learn more about and cultivatea personal devotion to the Holy Spirit.
