Jn 16:23b-28
[Jesus said to his disciples,] 23b“Amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you. 24Until now you have not asked anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.
25“I have told you this in
figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you
in figures but I will tell you clearly about the Father. 26On that day you will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I will ask the Father for you. 27For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came from God. 28I came from the Father and have come into the world. Now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”
Reflection:
Whatever you ask the Father in my name.
As he speaks of his imminent departure from the world and eventual
return to the Father, Jesus assures us that he is our intercessor before
the Father. Jesus prays for us and with us to the Father. When we pray
in Jesus’ name, he assures us of the Father’s intervention. He is in
solidarity with us. He knows our needs and supports us in our struggles.
Jesus desires our salvation. He wills
our safety and security in life. When we share our prayer with Jesus, we
will not ask anything only for ourselves or at the expense of other
people. The Father will thus give what we need.
God will not withhold
anything from us as long as it is for our own good and for our
salvation.
Jesus tells us that the Father loves us
because we love Jesus. The Father is pleased with our faith in Jesus.
Our obedience and commitment to Jesus show our reverence and love for
the Father.
Thank the Father for all the blessingsand answered prayers.
