Lk 5:27-32

27[Jesus] went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the customs post. He said to him, “Follow me.” 28And leaving everything behind, he got up and followed him. 29Then Levi gave a great banquet for him in his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were at table with them. 30The Pharisees and their scribes complained to his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” 31Jesus said to them in reply, “Those who are healthy do not need a physician, but the sick do. 32I have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners.”

Reflection:

Leaving everything behind. When Jesus calls, Levi makes a quick response: he leaves everything behind—what he has and what he has been doing, his money and his work, his family and his friends—and follows Jesus. What matters is Jesus alone. There is no hesitation or condition. His answer is swift and total.

Then Levi throws a despedida or going-away party. He does not keep Jesus only to himself; he shares him with others. He invites his fellow tax collectors to encounter Jesus and experience God’s mercy to sinners.

When God calls, let our response be immediate. Let us not make God wait. A tax collector, Levi is considered a traitor and a public sinner. Yet, Jesus calls him to be a disciple and accepts table fellowship with him, declaring that he has come to call sinners to repentance. With God’s invitation our dark past is set aside in forgiveness. God believes in us and hopes for the best in us.

Make it a point to speak about Jesusand to share Jesus in family gatheringsand business meetings.
