First off, let us just note that 2011 is not over yet.
There are still nine days to go and with the Iowa Caucus looming on the 2012 horizon there is still plenty of time for some career-ending gaffes.
They would have to register high on the gaffe scale, however, to make this year's list.
Suffice to say, it's been a pretty embarrassing year for politicians.

Newt Gingrich Is An Idiot NewtGingrich.com

In this day and age there is no excuse for not owning your own domain. None.
That goes times a million when you are a politician running for president. And yet, somehow Newt Gingrich, or anyone who worked for him, did not think to snap up NewtGingrich.com. Something the Internet was made aware of when someone clicked on it and discovered it led to a rotating cast of sites which exploited Newt's prior transgressions (Tiffany's, Greek vacations, etc.).
Back in the days before Rick Perry entered the national stage Michele Bachmann was the GOP's biggest gaffe-meister. Over the summer she had an especially difficult time getting her historical facts straight.
Here's what kind of year it's been: You probably saw this and had to take a minute to remind yourself who the Craigslist congressman was.
He's Christopher Lee. The married representative from upstate New York who took half naked photos of himself that he used to troll for women on Craigslist, which later found their way onto Gawker. Lee resigned that day, five weeks after taking office.
Lee owes Anthony Weiner a rather large debt of gratitude for making this transgression seem relatively minor (operative word being relatively).
Herman Cain's Libya
One could reasonably argue that Herman Cain's entire campaign was one long gaffe. But the moment that really stands out is his response to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's editorial board on Obama's handling of Libya. Behold.
Trump birther certificate
Oh Obama. After weeks of ridiculous (ridiculous) haranguing by the wannabe charlatan-in-chief Donald Trump over the origins of President Obama's birthplace the President capitulated and produced his longform birth certificate at a press conference.
The oops here is not the newsletters per se, the newsletters are deeply disturbing and offensive in their own right and speak to a much larger problem in Paul's make-up; as Ta-Nehisi Coates writes "You need not be a racist to be disqualified for presidency; a truly stunning level of incompetence will do in a pinch."
The 'oops' here is simply Paul leaving the interview. Not because it's not entirely in keeping with Paul's persona but because from a political standpoint it was the equivalent of throwing ten buckets of blood into the shark-infested media waters -- as predicted, the feeding frenzy was in full force this morning.
Iowa is 12 days away, where Paul's campaign has 12 days in it under this sort of scrutiny remains to be seen.
Considering how much has happened in the last twelve months it's sometimes hard to recall that at the beginning of this year Sarah Palin was still a political force to be reckoned with.
That ended when Palin decided, against Roger Ailes's advice, to respond to widespread accusations that she had somehow had a hand in the shooting of Rep. Gabby Giffords because she had released a map of congressional districts for campaigners to focus on during the midterms and highlighted each one with a gun site.
Instead of keeping quiet and letting mostly ginned-up silliness pass, Palin posted a home-done video (Ailes wouldn't let her use the Fox cameras), the same day President Obama was set to address a shell-shocked Tuscon (and nation), accusing the media of 'blood libel' presumably not realizing, among other things, that it was a term and long and terrible anti-Semitic associations.
