Jesus Laments

Today's Reflections

Jesus Laments

Mt 11:16-19

[Jesus said to the crowds,] 16“To what shall I compare this generation? It is like children who sit in marketplaces and call to one another, 17‘We played the flute for you, but you did not dance, we sang a dirge but you did not mourn.’18For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they said, ‘He is possessed by a demon.’ 19The Son of Man came eating and drinking and they said, ‘Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is vindicated by her works.”

Reflection:

Wisdom is vindicated by her works. One thing we sometimes overlook or misjudge is indifference. The “I do not care” attitude has killed more than the sword. It is often said, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing” (Edmund Burke). Doing nothing can take many forms: I do not want to be involved. What is in it for me there? What profit do I get from that? Who cares?! So leave them alone. Just give the people something they can play with to distract them. As long as my family is all right, I do not care about the rest. Just leave them on their own. Let me save myself first. These are all expressions of indifference.

A man is asked to help put out the forest fire. He does not care, saying the fire is far from his home. Well, the fire gets bigger and guts his house. “Wisdom is vindicated by her works.”
Help in cleaning your neighborhood with your kids.
