The Empty Tomb

The Empty Tomb

1On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala 2ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, “They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don’t know where they put him.” 3So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. 4They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; 5he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. 6When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, 7and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. 8Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed.

Reflection:

He saw and believed. After the birth of Jesus, we celebrate the feast of St. John, apostle and evangelist, the one whom Jesus loves. He runs to the tomb, faster than Peter, to see how his beloved friend is. He sees something that is not there and he believes. Between friends, no explanation or proof is needed; trial or death cannot end their friendship.

No wonder, for Jesus the greatest love is when one offers one’s life for one’s friends. Jesus has called us friends. This is not to downgrade our families or put them in a lesser light. In fact, it is best when our family members become our friends and when our friends become like family to us. Even a couple are the best of friends before they become husband and wife.

Celebrate your friends this season. Thank God for true and faithful friends!

Have a post-Christmas celebration with your best friends.
