Luke 11:1-4
Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when He had finished, one
of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John
taught his disciples.” He said to them, “When you pray, say:
Father, hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread and forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us, and do not subject us to the final test.”
Reflection
Lord, teach us to pray. More than a prayer, the Lord’s Prayer is a
way of life, a proposed draft of how we are to live and relate with our
God, who is Father to us all. It teaches us not only how and what to ask
our God, but also how to be humble and trusting before God and
forgiving to others, and how to live freely and peacefully.
It is said that we pray as we live and we live as we pray. If, for
example, we feel we are always short of funds, our prayers will often be
for money. If, in our prayers, we always bless the Lord for His
goodness, we will be blessed.
My mother once scolded her in-laws who always complained they had no
money, “Well,” she said, “it is because you always cry you have no money
that you indeed have no money.” I did not know the logic of her words
at first. What she meant dawned on me when I had my first parish where I
practiced not collecting any fees for religious service. Money was
never a problem for me during that time.
Lord, teach us to pray! Teach us to live!
Pray with feeling and mean and taste every word of the Our Father first thing in the morning.
