John 1:47-51
Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him and said of him, “Here is a
true Israelite. There is no duplicity in him.” Nathanael said to Him,
“How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip
called you, I saw you under the fig tree.” Nathanael answered Him,
“Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.” Jesus
answered and said to him, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw
you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.” And he
said to Him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see the sky opened and
the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
Reflection
How do You know me? God knows us, inside out and upside down,
including the count of the hairs on our head. God knows our needs even
before we ask Him. God sees our ways and reads our hearts. This is both
frightening and consoling. Because there is nothing we can hide from
God, there is nothing we should be ashamed of either – no need to
pretend, no excuses to present, no pressure to be who we are not.
Most of our hang-ups and tensions in life are caused by trying to
live up to people’s expectations. This is not the case with our God.
Because God knows us, we simply live freely and profess lovingly,
“Rabbi, You are the Son of God!”
Who am I without the titles and responsibilities?
