Peter's confession

August 21, 2011, 8:00am
MANILA, Philippines — MATTHEW 16:13-20

When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi He asked His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My heavenly Father.  And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Then He strictly ordered His disciples to tell no one that He was the Messiah.

Reflection

I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. The key to a man’s heart, they say, is his stomach. The key to a woman’s heart is to take her shopping. The key to a child’s heart is chocolates.

So what are the keys to God’s heart?

One is humility. One difficult thing about humility is that we cannot boast or speak about it. We live it, often without realizing that we have it. Humility believes that it is not about us but about the Lord, that it is not our work but God’s, and that there is a far superior knowledge and reason above our intelligent ways. Humility is sharing and loving so that we are not even aware of it because it has become natural for us.

Pray to discover humility and live it.

Another key is courage. This takes many forms – being able to dare, being our own persons, seeking our own destiny, not being afraid to commit mistakes, and volunteering ourselves first, like Peter. To let go and let God is the key to land in God’s arms.

Treat your mother and/or father out today.
