MATTHEW 19:13-15
Children were brought to [Jesus] that He might lay His hands on
them and pray. The disciples rebuked them, but Jesus said, “Let the
children come to Me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven
belongs to such as these.” After
He placed His hands on them, he went
away.
Reflection:
Children were brought to him… the disciples rebuked them. I
recall some things about our childhood that I no longer see in today’s
children. We played indigenous games like hide-and-seek and hop step,
not video war games.
We played with our neighbors in the yard, not alone in our rooms
with the computer. We made our own toys, not buy the ones with
batteries. We ate what was served at table; we did not ask to be brought
to fast-food restaurants if we did not like the dish.
We kept out of the living room when our elders gathered and
talked. We gave them our respect. We got dirtied playing in the streets;
we shared toys and games and night-outs. We cried, played, fought, and
survived.
We got spanked for a bad word. We got extra food for a good act. We did the “coming”; the elders, the “rebuking.”
Now it seems the other way around. The children do the rebuking,
and very few do the coming to Jesus. “Let the children come to Me,” the
Lord invites. We may need to let our childhood come back to us once in a
while.
Sing and play and bathe in the rain.
