It’s just a simple bag of beans, yet every bean inside carries its own baggage. It’s true; coffee is a crop with a storied history lined with casualties—both casualties of quality and casualties of human life. That provides reams of fodder for the companies that package these beans, which is why you so frequently see bags littered with inflated claims. And the thing is, most of these claims are, well, full of beans. Sure “fair trade” sounds good, but what does it really mean? And “shade grown”? Is that supposed to be a good thing?
