It’s just a simple bag of beans, yet every bean inside
carries its own baggage. It’s true; coffee is a crop with a storied
history lined with casualties—both casualties of quality and casualties
of human life. That provides reams of fodder for the companies that
package these beans, which is why you so frequently see bags littered
with inflated claims. And the thing is, most of these claims are, well,
full of beans. Sure “fair trade” sounds good, but what does it really
mean? And “shade grown”? Is that supposed to be a good thing? You’ll
want to know the answers to these questions before you buy your next bag
of coffee, and lucky for you, we’ve already done the legwork. |
