Smart Gilas' : Road to London 2012

Here's how the 2012 Olympics Basketball qualifiers will look like following the various qualifying stages from all  the FIBA  zones !
In the case of Smart Gilas , it will be participating in the FIBA Asia Championships where the contending Asian teams will battle it out for the lone automatic Asian entry represented by its Champion! The  first and second runner-ups will then  be given another chance as wild card entries in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament of 12 teams where the Top 3 teams will then qualify as backdoor entries in the London Olympics.There will be 12 teams who will battle it out for basketball supremacy in London next year :

• Great Britain as Olympics host; 
  USA as FIBA World Champion; 
  FIBA Asia Champion;
  FIBA Eurobasket Champion and 1st Runner-up;
  FIBA Africa Champion;
  FIBA Oceana Champion ;
  FIBA Americas first and second runner-ups ; and , 
  the Top Three wild card entries from the Olympic Qualifying Tournament !
  

  
  

  So does Smart Gilas have a chance of making it to the 2012 Olympics? 
  
  
  Yes, but it has to win the FIBA Asia Championships in Wuhan first! If it doesn't win the FIBA Asia, then at least Smart Gilas must land either first or second runner-up to make it to the wild card qualifying tournament and contend with 11 other entries for 3 or 4 spots to the Olympics proper!
  
  
  So that's going to be a long hard climb for Smart Gilas on its way to London 2012! 
  
  
  Again , its chances of making it to London?  It is going to be very tough and  very difficult for them starting with the FIBA Asia C'ship as it is bracketed with China (FIBA  rank 10) together with the UAE ( FIBA r 56) and  unranked Bahrain  ! 
  
  
  We can probably beat the UAE and Bahrain but it's going to be a long shot against China ! Then , we will have to get past anywhere from  Iran ( r 20) to  Lebanon (24), Qatar(29), Korea (31), Jordan (32), and Japan (33) to clinch 1 of 3 wild card slots for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament ! All these teams ranked higher than Smart Gilas( r53 )! 
  
  
  But the ball is round and anything can happen , assuming our players are all game fit and healthy! 
  
  
  In the 12 team  Qualifying Tournament , it will certainly be a  tougher and more difficult  tournament  for Smart Gilas , assuming we get a slot there! Those who didn't get automatic berths from their respective Zonal Qualifiers but finished 2nd or 3rd will play harder to get an Olympics berth in the Olympic Qualifiers ! Undoubtedly, these probable wild card entries ranked higher than us!
  
  
  So , let's just moderate our expectations and pray for the best!

2012 Olympic Games Basketball Tournament – qualifying process

12 teams will take part in the London 2012 Olympic Basketball tournaments for men. Qualification is secured as follows:

1 place for the host nation (GB)*

1 place for the FIBA World Champion (USA)

2 places for FIBA Americas (2011 FIBA Americas Championship winner and runner-up)

2 places for FIBA Europe (2011 EuroBasket winner and runner-up)

1 place for FIBA Africa (2011 FIBA Africa Championship winner)

1 place for FIBA Asia (2011 FIBA Asia Championship winner)

1 place for FIBA Oceania (2011 FIBA Oceania Championship winner)

3 or 4 places through Olympic Qualifying Tournament#

* granted to GB following the FIBA Central Board meeting on 12-13 March 2012
