John 21:20-25

Reading 1, Acts 11:21b-26; 13:1-3

²¹ The Lord helped them, and a great number believed and were converted to the Lord.

²² The news of them came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem and they sent Barnabas out to Antioch.

²³ There he was glad to see for himself that God had given grace, and he urged them all to remain faithful to the Lord with heartfelt devotion;

²⁴ for he was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and with faith. And a large number of people were won over to the Lord.

²⁵ Barnabas then left for Tarsus to look for Saul,

²⁶ and when he found him he brought him to Antioch. And it happened that they stayed together in that church a whole year, instructing a large number of people. It was at Antioch that the disciples were first called 'Christians'.

¹ In the church at Antioch the following were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen, who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

² One day while they were offering worship to the Lord and keeping a fast, the Holy Spirit said, 'I want Barnabas and Saul set apart for the work to which I have called them.'

³ So it was that after fasting and prayer they laid their hands on them and sent them off.

Responsorial Psalm, Psalms 98:1, 2-3, 3-4, 5-6

¹ [Psalm] Sing a new song to Yahweh, for he has performed wonders, his saving power is in his right hand and his holy arm.

² Yahweh has made known his saving power, revealed his saving justice for the nations to see,

³ mindful of his faithful love and his constancy to the House of Israel. The whole wide world has seen the saving power of our God.

⁴ Acclaim Yahweh, all the earth, burst into shouts of joy!

⁵ Play to Yahweh on the harp, to the sound of instruments;

⁶ to the sound of trumpet and horn, acclaim the presence of the King.

Gospel, Jn 21:20-25

²⁰ Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them -- the one who had leant back close to his chest at the supper and had said to him, 'Lord, who is it that will betray you?'

²¹ Seeing him, Peter said to Jesus, 'What about him, Lord?'

²² Jesus answered, 'If I want him to stay behind till I come, what does it matter to you? You are to follow me.'

²³ The rumour then went out among the brothers that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus had not said to Peter, 'He will not die,' but, 'If I want him to stay behind till I come.'

²⁴ This disciple is the one who vouches for these things and has written them down, and we know that his testimony is true.

²⁵ There was much else that Jesus did; if it were written down in detail, I do not suppose the world itself would hold all the books that would be written.
