JOHN 6:16-21
When it was evening, the disciples of Jesus went down to the sea,
embarked in a boat, and went across the sea to Capernaum. It had already
grown dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. The sea was stirred up
because a strong wind was blowing. When they had rowed about three or
four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat,
and they began to be afraid. But He said to them, “It is I. Do not be
afraid.” They wanted to take Him into the boat, but the boat immediately
arrived at the shore to which they were heading.
Reflection
The boat immediately arrived at the shore. I am fond of seas and
beaches. Every year I see to it that I go to the sea for a swim. And –
this may sound funny – sometimes I secretly make an attempt to walk on
water. I rush and run, walk slowly and lightly, or try to fly and jump.
But whatever I do, I always sink. So I just swim and push myself farther
into the sea, sometimes even against strong waves.
I may not attain Peter’s spirituality so as to be able to walk on
water with the Lord. But I have learned to swim, to float with ease, and
to lie restfully on the sea.
Jesus reaches the shore, walking on the sea. The boat also gets to
the shore. Jesus is God and can do anything. We are humans, but we can
do something, too. I may never do the impossible, like walk on water.
But we can enjoy swimming on water and can likewise reach the shore.
Dare to do something new today.
