BREAKING NEWS: PHILIPPINES beats Vietnam , 2-0 in AFF SUZUKI CUP 2010!
Before Rick Olivares sends out his report from Hanoi, let me be the first to write about this historic win by the Azkals in the on-going AFF Suzuki Cup 2010!
First win ! This is what could be a fitting historical footnote on the Philippines' win tonight against defending champion and powerhouse Vietnam , 2-0! You read it right , a first win by any Philippine team in this biennial meet against any seeded team!
First goal came on the 38th minute after a beautiful spinning header by midfielder Chris Greatwich, who incidentally also scored the tying goal against powerhouse Singapore during the last seconds of injury time, off a cross from the left side .
The second came after a brilliant fake by Phil Younghusband off a pass from the left for a winner just near the penalty box a few seconds before the 80th minute!
To win by 2 goals over Vietnam , the Philippines had to play a perfect defensive game coupled with a well calculated offensive play! True enough , the Azkals depended on its solid , compact defense coming from its formidable backline anchored on skipper Aly Borromeo with his gang of del Rosario , Gener and Gier. An almost perfect , timely and fearless goalkeeping by Etheridge also proved to be crucial although he was yellow-carded in the middle of the first half for catching the ball a few inches off the box!
As I said in an earlier blog, the Philippines has to beat Vietnam then draw or win against Myanmar on Wednesday , December 8 , to advance to the Semis... yes, for the first time!
That's going to be a very, very BIG news!It could well be the long awaited rebirth of Philippine football !
Go Philippines!
